Schools to follow single-session structure in next 5 to 10 years

  • Adherence to single-session structure would mean longer class periods especially for core subjects Maths, Science and English
  • 80% of the 10,000 schools follow single-session
  • More school buildings will be needed to make this happen in the next 5 to 10 years.

The Government hopes to have the single-session structure at all schools nationwide in five to 10 years time, said Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sr Muhyiddin Yassin.

"We have enough teachers (to make all schools single-session) but we need more schools.Single session schools (usually classes start from 8am to 3pm) were the norm in the early days but the rapid increase in students had forced many schools to have two sessions.
"This could also lead to extended schooling hours," he told reporters after visiting SMK Gombak Setia here on the second day of the PMR on Tuesday.

"I think this is important... we could easily add an hour for subjects like English, Mathematics or Science. This is how it's done in private schools," he added.

Muhyiddin, who is Education Minister, said building more schools would depend on budget allocations, adding that right now 80 percent of the country's 10,000 schools are single-session.

Single session classes are claimed to help students focus on their co-curricular activities. Moreover, each teacher gets more time to spend with the students with each subject/session extended to 50 minutes.

The move to a single-session structure is because double-session or partial session schools find it difficult to conduct activities in the afternoon because of the noise produced would distract the students having lessons. Students in the afternoon session meanwhile would have time for enrichment acitivities. There is also a lack of space and students will have to give way to the classes having lessons in the afternoon.
