What is International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, or commonly known as IB by many, is a worldwide recognised pre-university qualification and students send their results to higher education institutions annually in over 90 countries. Offered in Malaysia, it was founded in Geneva by the International Education Foundation to ensure their students are given the opportunity to receive an educational fit for a changing and globalizing world. The IB is a popular pre-university course as it offers students to choose for a range of subjects from numerous fields of study. IB will take up to 2 years with 2 intakes according to the institutions.



What are the streams you will study in a International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

The IB curriculum is made up for its Diploma Programme Cores and Six Subject Groups. The DP cores are required components as its aim is to broaden the student’s educational experiences but also, challenge them to apply their skills and knowledge everywhere.

The three core elements are:

  • Theory of Knowledge - A philosophical/critical thinking unit where the students are to reflect on the nature of the knowledge found in society and to question what we know and what we claim to know
  • The Extended Essay - An independent, self-directed piece of research which finishes off with a 4,000-word essay
  • Creativity, Activity and Service - An independent project that requires 150 hours of service related to those three concepts

Now, the IB is recognized for having its substantial range of streams for the students to choose and study from. Within the course, students are able to choose their subjects from six subject groups. Within the subject groups, there are different subjects / courses a student can choose from for their diploma.

What are the subjects you will study in a International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

The course is split up into two subject groups, Higher Level (HL) and Standard Level (SL). From the six subject group available, the students are to choose 3 HL Subjects and 3 SL Subjects. Each student has the choice to take at least but not more that four subjects for their HL subjects, and the remaining subjects are to be done at standard level. Standard level subjects take up 150 teaching hours. Higher level comprises 240 teaching hours.

What is the Exam structure in International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma?

Exam Structure:

The exam schedule for the IB is split into two intakes, November or May.

The exams fall under an external assessment and the exams include:

Grading System:

The candidate's final IBDP result score is made up of the combined scores for each subject. The diploma is only awarded to students who have gain at least 24 points. This is subjected to certain minimum levels of performance including successful completion of the three essential elements of the DP cores.
