Study UK | Malaysia’s No.1 Higher Education Website

The idea of studying in a country with posh accents and indulging in afternoon tea and biscuits as your daily routine can indeed be an exciting thought. As buzzing as it sounds, however, you can’t avoid planning the expense of your entire studies before even thinking about bursting the university gates to enrol in your new adventure. If you’re curious to know what the expected cost of taking up a degree fully in the UK is, then you’ve landed on the right page.To make things easier for you, we will walk you through the cost based on tuition fees, cost of living, additional expenses and provide you with a breakdown of the UPDATED 2023 total cost of studying a degree in the UK at the end of this article.
Tuition fees for International Students
Being a popular study destination, studying in the UK is far from being inexpensive. The cost of tuition varies between universities and is also influenced by the kind of degree you are enrolled in. On average, you must expect the cost of the annual tuition fee to be around £21,000, which converts to RM112,000 in our local currency.A regular degree programme lasts roughly three years, therefore if you multiply the cost by three, the total tuition fee is RM336,000.Although a UK degree is quite expensive, it is still ranked lower in cost compared to the annual cost of a degree in the USA and Australia. This is because the degree programs in the UK are generally shorter than in the USA and Australia. Undergraduate degrees typically take three years to complete in the UK, compared to four years in the USA and Australia. This shorter duration means that students spend less on tuition fees and living expenses.Apart from that, the UK government also regulates tuition fees for domestic and international students. The tuition fees for international students in the UK are generally lower than in the USA and Australia. This is partially due to the fact that UK universities are subsidized by the government and can charge lower tuition fees.
Cost of living
The average cost of living there will be broken down into several parts, to give you an idea of how much you would be spending as an average student living a day-to-day life in the UK.
1) Accommodation
Accommodation per month can vary depending on the location and type of accommodation chosen. On average, a student can expect to pay around £8,000 per year for accommodation. This includes the cost of rent, utilities, and internet altogether.
2) Food
The average cost of food for a student in the UK is around £2,500 per year. This includes groceries and eating out at restaurants and cafes.
3) Transportation
The cost of transportation may differ depending on where the university is located and the student's means of transportation. An average student can anticipate spending about £1000 a year on transportation, which includes the cost of public transportation and occasional taxi rides.
4) Personal expenses
The cost of personal expenses can also vary depending on the student's lifestyle. On average, a student can expect to pay around £2,000 per year for personal expenses. This includes the cost of clothing, toiletries, studying materials, and entertainment.Overall, the total cost of living for an international student in the UK is about £40,500 for three years, depending on the factors listed above. It is important to note that this is just an estimate, and the actual cost of living can vary widely depending on the individual circumstances of each student.
Additional Expenses
To make sure that you would get an accurate estimate for your overall study abroad cost, we need to know what are the hidden costs that may not come to mind. Realistically, you won’t be able to pass the boarding gates as a student if you don’t hold a student Visa. The cost of the visa fee can vary depending on the type of visa and the length of the student's stay in the UK.As of February 2023, the current visa application fee for a Tier 4 (General) student visa, taking up a course longer than 6 months, is £348. *Visa application fees are subject to change and students should check the latest information on the UK government's official visa website before applying.Additionally, students may need to pay a healthcare surcharge as part of their visa application, which gives them access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) during their studies. The healthcare surcharge is currently set at £470 per year for most students. The healthcare surcharge gives students access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) during their studies, which provides free or low-cost medical treatment to UK residents. While the healthcare surcharge provides access to the NHS, it may not cover all medical expenses. Students may want to consider additional health insurance coverage to supplement the NHS, particularly if they have specific medical needs or want to ensure that they have access to private medical treatment. On that particular note, international students should carefully consider their individual health needs and budget when choosing a health insurance plan, and should also check with their university to see if they offer any health insurance options for students. Some universities in the UK may offer discounted health insurance plans or other healthcare services for international students.Aside from Visa and Health Insurance, you don’t want to miss out on a full university experience by joining student activities and clubs, which can be a great way to meet new people and get involved in the community, and pursue hobbies and interests outside of academics. Some activities and clubs may require a fee to participate, so you should expect around £5 to £30 per academic year, depending on the club and the university. To be safe, set aside about £50 per year in case you want to join multiple clubs, or join certain campus activities that may require you to pay more fees.
The Big Breakdown
Now that we have covered the tuition fees, cost of living, and additional expenses that an international student may incur, we can finally calculate the overall cost of studying in the UK for a degree. The estimated total cost can be seen in this table: OR, Watch the clip below: In conclusion, you can expect that the total cost of studying a standard 3-year degree programme in the UK would be around RM563,870. Surely that’s a lot of money to churn out, but the experience and quality of academic knowledge you’ll gain from a UK degree is priceless. Aside from getting personal sponsorship from your very own F-A-M-A (father and mother), you have another option if you wish to seek financial support. Here's several scholarship options you can consider that will cover your studies in the UK.If scholarship is not an option for you, there are actually 2 more options you can take, that will still earn you a UK Degree. This is the cheapest option for you to get a UK degree.Aside from that,You might also want to check out this study option that allows you to study in both Malaysia and the UK under one programme!Traveling to the UK is one thing, but have you considered what path will secure you for a stable career? Top 5 Universities in the UK for Business & Management Studies

It’s not every day that you get a chance to study in the United Kingdom. While education should (and rightfully so) be your top priority, you definitely need to explore your surroundings while you’re there. What’s the point of travelling halfway across the world if you’re not going to fully use your time there to venture out and see what’s around? We at Afterschool.my have compiled a list—though by no means exhaustive—of things you can do while you’re studying in the UK. Most if not all of the things mentioned in the list are considerably cheaper or free for students. So, without further ado, let’s get down to it!
1. Visit a museum
Image via Victoria and Albert MuseumThe UK is rich with history and culture, carefully preserved in the many museums across the region. A day at the museum is never enough—you may need several days to really take in everything in one museum. You’ll be glad to know that a lot of the museums in the UK, especially in London, are completely free! So you can just waltz in any day you like and begin your journey backwards in time. Some of the most popular museums with free admission in London are the Victoria and Albert (V&A) Museum, Tate Modern, The National Gallery, Natural History Museum and the British Museum.

2. Go to the theatre
One of the roots of theatre or stage performance is in the UK. When we think of the greatest playwright in history, we often think of Shakespeare. There are tonnes of theatre shows happening in the West End of London every night, and theatre is such a big deal there that you’ll find pop-up booths everywhere you turn, selling tickets at prices as low as £10.London is not the limit—outside of the city, you can experience more theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of Shakespeare himself. In the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, you can watch his plays performed live as well as other non-Shakespeare shows. Alternatively, in Scotland, there are a number of theatre bars where you can watch actors perform as you enjoy your drinks.

3. Have a picnic in the park
Image via The Royal ParksAnother absolutely free thing that you can do in the UK is go to a park! And no, we don’t mean a small, overly crowded park with a playground for kids. We’re talking about parks big enough for you to get lost in. The Royal Parks in London (Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, etc.) are just one example of the kind we’re talking about. The UK takes great care of its greens, as seen in the sprawling fields of grass and the hills in the countryside. Depending on where you’ll be studying, there will surely be a nice bed of green for you and your friends to set up a picnic on.

4. Take a trip to the beach
Image via TripAdvisorA lot of people like to complain about the gloomy English weather, but you’ll be surprised to discover that there are also plenty of beaches to enjoy in the UK. Brighton is a popular seaside spot, with amusement arcades to add to the entertainment. Portsmouth in England’s south coast has several fantastic beaches and cafés for you to explore. The weather in the summer—not as hot as Malaysia’s near 40°C—can be warm enough for a perfect beach day. Between April and July (which is when you’ll have a break between your academic years), the climate is lovely for you and your friends to go swimming and enjoy the fresh sea breeze. You can also grab some good old British fish and chips at any of the cafés and restaurants adorned along the beach.

5. Explore a castle
Image via ‘Warwick Castle’ on WikipediaAs mentioned above, the UK is rich in history and the region does its best to preserve old artefacts. One cool thing you can do while you’re in the UK is go castle-hunting—not to live in, of course, but to look at how people lived and went about their daily lives a few hundred years or so ago.If you are a history buff, you’re going to love visiting all the medieval castles spread throughout the UK, particularly in England and Scotland where many of the buildings have become ruins of what were once great castles. Castle visits usually cost £20 or lower. However, there are usually special prices for groups, so you can get your friends together and spend an entire day lurking in the hallowed halls of kings past. Some of the most popular castles in the UK are Dover Castle in Kent (the largest castle in England), Tintagel Castle in Cornwall (usually associated with the legend of King Arthur) and Edinburgh Castle in Scotland.

6. Visit iconic sites of pop culture
Image via The BeatlesIf you’re into British pop culture icons like The Beatles or Harry Potter, then the UK is surely your oyster. There are lots of iconic sites all around the UK (sort of like ‘Easter eggs’) that you can explore, most if not all just a train ride away. Snap a photo to say, ‘I’ve been there!’Abbey Road as in the image above is an iconic spot for tourists and locals alike. The wall of the Abbey Road Studios is graced with notes from The Beatles fans who have visited the spot. Besides that, another iconic site is Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire, after which the Wayne Manor in The Dark Knight Rises was modelled. Exterior shots of scenes of Batman’s house were shot there and, interestingly enough, Wollaton Hall is five miles north of Gotham through which the fictional Gotham City indirectly got its name.If you’re a Sherlock fan, then good news—you can visit the Sherlock Holmes Museum on the (very real) No. 221B, Baker Street. For only £10, you can immerse yourself in the experience of being inside the home of Sherlock Holmes. As mentioned, this is by no means an exhaustive list. You can find lots more fun things to do in the UK as you spend more time exploring your surroundings after your lectures and seminars. The best tip to live day to day as a UK student is to hang out with the locals there, so it’s a good idea to make friends with people from various backgrounds so you can all tour the region together.

It’s not every day that you get a chance to study in the United Kingdom. While education should (and rightfully so) be your top priority, you definitely need to explore your surroundings while you’re there.

6 Inexpensive Things to Do While You're Studying in the UK

Many Malaysian students dream of studying in the United Kingdom from a young age. Perhaps it stemmed from a fascination towards a football club, or maybe even the red double decker buses that have become symbolic of the country. Growing older, this fascination may have even evolved, thinking it possible to head on over, maybe even call it home for a few years as they look to gain a degree. As they grew older too of course, came the realisation that the dream wasn’t as easy to realise as one thought it to be, nor as affordable as it may have seemed. Students usually ponder long and hard before taking the leap to study in the UK, weighing up the pros and cons, establishing whether studying in the UK is worth splurging on. Well, long story short, we can tell you that it definitely is, and then some. Not convinced? Let us then sway your mind, not with fiction, but rather fact, five of them to be exact, as we list the top 5 reasons to Study in the UK.

Enrol with a bachelor’s degree, graduate with a master's
What is the sorcery we speak of? Well this type of course is mainly related to engineering. No, the course isn’t extended by a year or two. The same tried and trusted 4-year long engineering course sees students graduate with a Masters in Engineering (M.Eng), accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) on behalf of the UK’s Engineering Council for the purposes of fully meeting the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer in the UK. This accreditation is recognised by engineering boards around the world, including the Board of Engineers Malaysia via the international agreement known as the Washington Accord. Should you choose to exit this programme after successfully completing three years of study, you will be eligible for a BEng qualification (Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering). All this is to say that you’ll be placed in a thriving academic ecosystem, that will push you to do your best, with the outcome an almost inevitable win-win.

Top quality education guaranteed
While many students choose to flock to other countries due to a multitude of reasons, a bastion which students can lean on if they ever do choose to study in the UK, is the quality of education that’s guaranteed. Having always been home to household names in academia, the sheer number of universities that commonly crack the top 100 of any rankings never fails to surprise, with the 2018 QS World University Rankings being no different. 16 institutions in total from the United Kingdom managed to claim a spot atop the best 100, streaking ahead of other notable overseas hotspots for Malaysians such as Australia (7), Canada (4) and only losing out to the much larger USA.

A variety of courses
The United Kingdom is where the most commonly accepted pre-university course, A-Levels, was born. Many Malaysian students are left baffled by their offerings; 40 plus subjects in which you can choose from, like a kid in a very educational candy store. This trend too continues to their Degree courses, as well as postgraduate courses. Courses that you may have been had your heart set on, only to find them barely given a second thought locally, are given the same treatment as the more popular ones over in Britain, and go one step further to offer courses you may have never even knew to exist!

Key to the rest of Europe
Many students need to have the full college-experience when they set off to university. Being able to travel during semester breaks, meeting new people of diverse cultures, seeing places your eyes never thought they’d ever glance at and more. The United Kingdom then, offers a distinct advantage when compared to other popular university destinations; it’s a gateway to the rest of Europe. Students would be able to travel to numerous neighbouring countries that surround the UK, such as Spain, France, Portugal and so many more with ease. And before you ask, it’s at minimal cost, as you’d be able to travel to and fro via train! Imagine setting off in the morning while enjoying tea and biscuits, only to find yourself stuffing your face with empanadas come noon time, before watching the sun set at Camp Nou as Messi scores a 30-yard curler. Imagine.

Familiarity
Despite all the trappings that may line the UK’s academic offerings arsenal, there will inevitably be those moments of longing. Longing for something familiar from home, be it the people, the food, anything that would trigger those memories of Malaysia that start to gather dust over time. It should come as good news then, that the UK does offer a sense of familiarity, in the form it’s education. Everything is of course, based in English. On top of that, STPM, or what it was known as before the name change, High School Certificate (HSC), was the precursor to the GCE A-Levels in the UK. The exam oriented style is similar to what we know, eventually taking students from within their comfort zones and truly expanding them, as the lessons eventually lead towards much more emphasis on real-life implementation.

All subject tests, except for the LNAT, are centrally administered by Oxford’s Admissions Testing Service. For Cambridge, there is the Cambridge Law Tests and written work for BA Law, the Bio-Medical Admission Test (BMAT) for medicine and veterinary medicine. How to Apply to UK Universities

Planning your future can be difficult. More so if you plan to study abroad, with costs in different countries being quite difficult to estimate, the cherry on top of the very expensive cake that is your plan. Fees for universities overseas can be astronomical, so, before you Google what organs you can afford to live without and proceed to sell them, we thought it would be wise to let you in on a little secret, so come close. Ready? Well, there are countries in which you can study for free, or at a very nominal cost.
Germany

Although public universities in Germany are free, they might reintroduce fees for international students. The cost of living there is also very high.
Now if you’ve been following our articles recently (Of course you have!), you’ll know that it’s completely free to study in Germany, even undergraduate programmes, although that’s only at public universities. Even though the cost of living is high over here (you’ll need to prove you have around USD9,230 annually to obtain a visa), it will still amount to less than tuition fees, which explains the ever-booming interest in studying here. Word of caution: Some universities are going to re-introduce fees for international students, so you better be quick!

France

The courses in France are, of course, conducted in French. Most of the people prefer to speak in French than English so it’s best to pick up the language.
Ooh la la! Little known fact, it’s practically free to study in France as well (The small matter of USD195 annually). Most undergraduate courses are in French though, so you may want to start picking up the language (No, watching Ratatouille doesn’t count!). Living expenses aren’t too high as well, around USD10,180 annually, although Paris is more expensive (It was voted the Best Student City).

Norway

With its amazing landscape and northern lights, there’s also more to Norway than just free higher education.
The first of a few Nordic countries to appear on the list, university study in Norway is available for free to all students, regardless of study level or nationality. The majority of courses are in Norwegian though, so once again, you may want to use this free time to pick up one or two languages.

Be prepared, Sweden and Denmark have really cold and long winters so you might want to bring thick winter clothes that can keep you warm.
Okay, so they do charge students outside the EU for their courses. Then why did we put them on the list? (No, we haven’t gone crazy) Both these countries are on here because they offer exceptional PhD candidates a chance to obtain their degree for free AND they pay you a salary (Getting your cake and eating it too).

Iceland
Iceland may be cold, but their hearts are one of the warmest ones around. They don’t charge tuition fees, with an annual registration fee of USD425 being the only charge. But here’s the catch, notice we didn’t talk about the living costs for all the countries in Northern Europe? Well, you need to know that it’s going to cost a lot to live there, the costs being among some of the highest in the world (A healthy economy means expensive stuff). But hey, you can’t put a price on a warm heart!

Czech Republic

Ma Vlast, a famous symphonic cycle by Bed?ich Smetana, is about his homeland, Czech Republic. It is home to one of the world’s well-known classical composers.
Most of you may know this country as the home of Pavel Nedved and Milan Baros. Students who speak the native language are able to study for free, here. If you are, however, uninterested to learn Czech, then you’ll pay a modest USD4,260 per year for their courses. Living costs also amount to around USD4,200-9000 a year.

Argentina

Lionel Messi, a famous footballer is from Argentina.
What’s a pirate’s favourite country? Arrrrrr-gentina of course! Public universities charge international students a small, nominal fee to enroll, whereas if private institutions tickle your fancy, you’ll have to fork out upwards of USD5,000 annually.

If you plan to study abroad, costs in different countries can be quite difficult to estimate. The good news is, not all countries require tuition fees.

Everyone seems to be obsessed with rankings, aren’t they? From school, when you’re ranked in class, nervous as the number will be jotted down in your report book, which your parents will then have to sign. Well it doesn’t stop, not even when it comes to institutions of higher learning. Year after year, more and more rankings are released, from the famous QS World University Rankings to Asian University Rankings, which found the National University of Singapore at at the top, two years running (You can apply for admission into NUS here). Well, the folks over at Times Higher Education, UK, teamed up with a HR consultancy firm called Emerging to come up with the top universities which are preparing their students best for employment, according to the very companies that hire them.
Read on and find out which universities can boost your chances of finding a job right after graduation

Stanford University

This university has been featured in the film, The Social Network whom the main character is played by Jesse Eisenberg
The very famous university which appeared in The Social Network, has been a mainstay in the tech community, with its influence on Silicon Valley (The place to be for anyone interested in technology) unquestionable. Even if you do put the razzmatazz surrounding the university in mainstream media on the backburner, that facts don’t lie. Ranked no.2 in the world by QS world University Rankings and, if you add up the valuation of companies founded by faculty and alumni, it’ll amount to staggering USD 2.7 trillion.LocationCaliforniaQS World University Ranking2Global University Employability Ranking5Tuition & FeesUSD 47,940

University of Cambridge

The University of Cambridge is famous for its tradition in mathematics and science. It is also known as one of the oldest higher institutions being founded in 1209
Taking a trip across the pond, and we reach the no.4 on the list with the University of Cambridge. While many universities can lay claim to being one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions, Cambridge gets to sit on the throne, for it was founded in 1209 and is the second oldest university in the English-speaking world. Arguably, the university is most famous for its distinguished tradition in mathematics and science, seeing the likes of Sir Isaac Newton spend the majority of his life conducting many famous experiments there, and Stephen Hawking obtaining his PhD as well as taking up the role of Director of Research.LocationCambridge, EnglandQS World University Ranking4Global University Employability Ranking4Tuition & Fees£9,000 per year for all undergraduate courses

Harvard University

Harvard is one of the eight Ivy Leagues in the US and it has been established in 1636
The oldest institution of higher learning in the United States, Harvard is probably the most famous institution on this list, having a knack of associating the Harvard name with many, now-famous alumni. While many know that the creator of the social networking behemoth Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, studied here, few know Natalie Portman also completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology here. Once again, if you think it’s all glitz and glamour , well, Harvard’s alumni also includes 8 US presidents, several foreign heads of state, 62 living billionaires, and some 130 Nobel laureates. Quite the list, isn’t it?LocationMassachusetts, BostonQS World University Ranking3Global University Employability Ranking3Tuition & FeesUSD 47,074

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)

Do you know that the Marvel Superhero, Iron Man aka Tony Stark, is an alumni of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology?
While MIT may not have had the pleasure of gaining mainstream exposure like the other universities on this list (Perhaps that may have had something to do with the difficulty one may encounter while trying to spell Massachusetts), it has steadily been climbing the QS World University Rankings, creeping its way up the ladder in a subtle fashion. So why then is it no.2 on this list? Well, MIT alumni founded or co-founded many notable companies, such as Intel, McDonnell Douglas, Texas Instruments, 3Com, Qualcomm, Bose, Raytheon, Koch Industries, Rockwell International, Genentech, Dropbox, and Campbell Soup, with a study on living MIT alumni finding companies founded by them generate global revenues around USD 1.9 trillion.LocationMassachusetts, BostonQS World University Ranking 1Global University Employability Ranking 2Tuition & Fees USD 48,452

California Institute of Technology (Caltech)

Caltech achieved a ranking of No.1 in the QS World University Rankings
Caltech probably shares the same shade as MIT, allowing the other institutions on this list to hog the limelight as the institution silently inches closer to the top. Caltech has enjoyed success in the QS World University Rankings, gaining a few places every year, and has achieved the no.1 ranking on this list by having a tiny student population compared to other colleges, allowing for a close-knit ecosystem of students and teachers to co-exist and thrive.LocationPasadena, CaliforniaQS World University Ranking 5Global University Employability Ranking 2Tuition & FeesUSD 47,577 While these universities may seem as if they’re out of your reach, fret not.
