"I have a dream." These iconic words from Martin Luther King Jr. echo the aspirations of many, including Lim Zi Jie, who envisioned working in a hospital — donning the white robes of a dietitian, managing patients’ conditions, and guiding them toward healthier lifestyles. That dream first took shape during a secondary school biology class, where Zi Jie discovered her fascination with how the human body transforms food into energy."At that time, I was wondering how our human body can be so powerful to help digest our food and use it as the source of energy," she says.Fueled by this newfound passion, she began researching universities after graduating from secondary school. Her search led her to the International Medical University (IMU), where she found the perfect programme to turn her aspirations into reality. “I’ve compared a few universities, but I found that IMU’s Dietetics with Nutrition courses suit me the best, as IMU can be said to be the best private university for dietetics courses, and the programme structure is conducted by experienced lecturers.”

Zi Jie’s interest in nutrition began in secondary school after a biology class on the digestive system.

Pursuing a Bachelor's Degree at IMU and the Support That Shaped Zi Jie’s Path
Studying at IMU provided Zi Jie with a well-rounded and supportive environment. While the campus was smaller compared to others, it offers all the essential facilities for students to thrive, including an atrium, student lounge, café, e-learning lab, and library. The flexible timetable stood out to her, as it allowed her to juggle academic commitments alongside extracurricular activities and events. The programme itself was enriched by strong academic support. IMU’s mentor-mentee pairing system allowed each lecturer to guide a small group of students, monitor their progress, and offer assistance with any challenges. “During my internship in my final year, I was struggling with a concept, and my mentor took the time to explain it clearly and share her experiences.”Additionally, the senior-junior support system at IMU played an essential role in Zi Jie’s journey. She often sought advice from her seniors, who shared study tips and strategies that helped her along the way. While the campus support systems were crucial to her experience, it was the personal mentorship from her lecturers that truly shaped Zi Jie’s academic and personal growth. Among them, Dr Chen Seong Ting, a senior lecturer in her programme, stood out as a guiding force.Having had the privilege to work closely with Dr Chen during her undergraduate research project, Zi Jie fondly remembers how she guided her every step of the way. “She is a very supportive lecturer who answered my questions in detail, ensuring I was on the right track.” Dr Chen not only encouraged Zi Jie to present her research at the prestigious Malaysia Dietitian Association Conference in 2022 but also played a pivotal role in getting her first research article published in the IMU journal.Beyond academics, Dr Chen imparted life-changing advice. She always emphasised the importance of being mindful, detailed, and confident — qualities that Zi Jie carries with her to this day. “I’ve been influenced by this lecturer a lot, changing from an extreme introvert to someone who is more meticulous and outgoing.”Dr. Chen’s guidance also extended to helping Zi Jie explore job opportunities and providing career advice that she still treasures today.

For Zi Jie, IMU's Dietetics with Nutrition programme stood out for its strong reputation, integrated curriculum, and experienced lecturers.

Gaining Practical Experience and Valuable Skills
As part of the Dietetics with Nutrition programme at IMU, Zi Jie was required to complete a year-long dietetic practicum, which provided invaluable hands-on experience across three key areas: food service, community, and clinical settings. Her journey began at Regency Specialist Hospital in Johor, where she focused on food service management. There, she learned the intricacies of food procurement and the entire kitchen operation, from sourcing ingredients to serving meals to patients. “We had two assignments during that time — creating vegetarian menus for diabetic patients and working on a quality improvement project to enhance the food service.”Next, her community placement took her to Klinik Kesihatan in Seremban, where she provided outpatient counselling to patients. She and her group also gave a talk on diet control for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to pregnant mothers, an experience that deepened her understanding of public health nutrition. Her clinical placement was at Hospital Tuanku Ja’afar in Seremban, a teaching hospital partnered with IMU. Here, Zi Jie managed patients with various acute and chronic conditions requiring dietetic-related services. “All these experiences allowed us to learn how to be competent dietitians, providing the best care by using up-to-date information and recommendations.”This comprehensive practicum solidified her passion for dietetics, leaving her more determined than ever to pursue a career in the field.Beyond technical skills, IMU’s environment nurtured the development of vital interpersonal qualities that would prove crucial in her career. One such skill was time management. Zi Jie, as part of a pioneering team, helped launch Malaysia’s first-ever student-led dietetic clinic at IMU during her final year. The experience was demanding, as it required balancing hospital work with late-night discussions about the clinic, but it was also gratifying. “I always enjoyed learning outside of lecture classes, as it helped me strengthen my soft skills and broaden my social circle.”Another key skill Zi Jie developed was leadership. Taking on the role of group leader during her final year, she guided her team through assignments and projects. “I became more thoughtful and careful, balancing team dynamics while making sure everyone was aligned toward the same goal.”

Today, Zi Jie is a dietitian at Gleneagles Hospital Johor.

Advice for Aspiring Dietitians and Reflections on a Meaningful Career
For those considering a path in Dietetics with Nutrition, Zi Jie offers some thoughtful advice: passion is key. “It’s important to ensure that you are truly passionate about food, nutrition, and people.”The programme requires a deep understanding of human physiology and the complex relationship between diet and diseases to provide accurate and effective patient care.Curiosity and a commitment to staying updated are equally essential. Zi Jie emphasises the need to stay informed about the latest diet trends and research, noting that patients are often well-informed about their conditions. “Sometimes patients know better than us about certain diseases, so make sure you’re ready for that.”Even activities like reading nutrition labels during grocery trips can contribute to better understanding and offering informed recommendations to patients. For aspiring students, the key is to keep exploring, stay curious, and embrace learning opportunities both in and outside the classroom. As she reflects on her current role, Zi Jie’s dedication to her profession shines through. Now working as a clinical dietitian in a private hospital, she manages patients with diverse medical conditions, counselling them toward healthier lifestyles. “It’s incredibly satisfying when I persuade patients to make changes and see them progress,” she says, noting that these moments serve as her motivation to continue striving for excellence in her field.Beyond the hospital, her work extends into the community, where she joins her team in conducting health screenings. Using tools like the body composition analyser, she assesses individuals’ muscle and fat levels and provides tailored advice. These interactions remind her of the broader impact dietitians can have—not just on individuals but on the community as a whole.

The mind holds mysteries that, once unlocked, can lead to healing and hope. For Padma Ahbirami, understanding these mysteries became more than just an interest; it became her purpose. Her path to psychology at Monash University Malaysia was fueled by the pressing need for mental health advocacy in her community, where mental health issues are often stigmatised. Observing friends and family members quietly struggle with anxiety and depression, Padma felt a deep urge to understand the complexities of the mind and to help those facing these challenges. With her parents’ support and a shared vision for her future, she chose Monash University Malaysia for her Bachelor’s in Psychological Sciences. Monash offered both the international recognition she sought and a curriculum that would prepare her to advocate for mental well-being in meaningful ways. Padma is a receiver of the Monash High Achiever Award Scholarship.
A Supportive Learning Environment at Monash University Malaysia
Monash University is renowned worldwide for its academic excellence, consistently ranked among the top 50 universities in the QS World University Rankings. The Malaysian branch upholds these high standards, providing a global-level education focusing on student success and innovative learning. For Padma, studying at Monash meant access to world-class resources and a supportive academic environment. Her experience was shaped by the unwavering support from lecturers and tutors, who were always available to help when she faced assignments or course content challenges. Padma’s educators often conduct drop-in sessions that allow students to clarify any confusion, ensuring that everyone understands the requirements. She particularly appreciated how genuinely invested her lecturers were, usually staying after class to provide additional support. The university’s facilities also played a crucial role in her studies. As a book lover, Padma’s favourite spot on campus was the library, which has three floors dedicated to different study zones. It became the perfect space for both focused study and collaborative group work. Alongside the academic resources, the social environment at Monash also fostered a sense of community. "I met amazing individuals who strived for greatness together, offering mutual support in the ways we needed," she says. While Padma doesn’t have a single favourite lecturer, she values the collective insights gained from all her mentors. “Every one of them has their unique teaching style, and I'm grateful to all of them for their contributions,” she says. Some of her lecturers went beyond textbooks, sharing personal stories about ethical dilemmas and challenges they faced in their careers. These real-world anecdotes offered perspectives rarely found in academic resources, enriching her understanding of the complexities within psychology.Among the most impactful advice she received at Monash were the importance of seeking help whenever needed and the value of effective time management, which helped her navigate the demands of university life with focus and efficiency. Most importantly, Padma continues to draw inspiration from the advice to stay connected to the purpose that first drew her to the field of psychology — a reminder to remain steadfast in her goals and passions.Padma Ahbirami is certified as a Standard Mental Health First Aider by Mental Health First Aid Malaysia.
Gaining Real-World Experience Through Internships
Padma’s time at Monash wasn’t limited to classroom learning. While internships were not mandatory during her degree, she deliberately explored practical experience during semester breaks to broaden her skills. She undertook two internships, each offering unique insights into different fields. Her first internship was with Hawkr, a start-up platform for homemade food, where she explored diverse roles in marketing, advertising, sales, and business development. The experience gave her valuable exposure to the inner workings of a start-up and helped her develop a versatile skill set.Her second internship aligned closely with her passion for mental health. At the Malaysian Mental Health Association, an NGO focused on mental health advocacy, she gained hands-on experience in crisis management and learned about the daily struggles of individuals with mental illnesses. “This internship deepened my understanding of the mental health sector and reinforced my commitment to making a difference,” she says, reflecting on how these experiences prepared her for future challenges in the field. Monash University Australia awarded Padma the Stella Crossley Prize for achieving the highest aggregate marks in second-year psychology core subjects.
Wisdom of an Award-Winning Student
Padma also learned several skills crucial in her master's studies and career during her time at Monash. Effective time management was essential as she balanced internships, adapted to pandemic challenges and embraced new experiences during her semester abroad. Alongside this, resilience and perseverance played a key role, especially when faced with obstacles. Motivated to excel for herself and her parents, Padma developed a strong determination that fueled her success. These qualities culminated in her receiving the prestigious ‘Overall Best Graduate for the Bachelor of Psychological Science’ award. While Padma humbly acknowledges that many of her peers were equally deserving, she believes her ability to stay focused, work hard and learn from feedback were pivotal in earning the recognition.
"The journey was tough, but it was ultimately worth it," she says, highlighting the dedication and drive that shaped her academic success.
For future students of Monash, Padma's advice was clear: make the most of the resources and opportunities available. "The library is an invaluable resource that can greatly enhance your learning experience," she says. She also emphasises the value of building strong friendships and enjoying your time at university, as they provide crucial support throughout the academic journey.Padma encourages students to always ask lecturers and tutors for help.
"Seeking their guidance can make a significant difference in your understanding and success.”
Above all, she stresses the importance of staying curious and embracing every opportunity that comes your way, noting that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.Padma made her parents proud by graduating not only with First Class Honours but also as the top of her class.
Balancing Academics and Work: Padma’s Current Endeavours
Currently, Padma is pursuing her Master’s in Professional Counselling at Monash, a journey she finds both fulfilling and exciting. Her role in sales and marketing provides valuable professional experience while allowing her the flexibility to balance her full-time programme's rigorous demands. "The supportive and healthy work environment at Hawkr makes it a pleasure to be part of the team," she says. This dual commitment reflects Padma’s determination to excel academically while continuing to grow professionally.

Follow Padma Ahbirami’s inspiring journey of passion and purpose as she carves her path at Monash University Malaysia.

Padma Ahbirami: A Journey of Purpose and Passion at Monash University Malaysia

While most teenagers are drawn to video games or sports, Leen Jason’s interests took him in a different direction. From as young as 13 years old, Jason was deeply captivated by the world of finance and investing. This captivation has led him to a promising career in investment analysis, not even 10 years later! At 22 years old, Jason works at an asset management firm, analysing equities and managing client funds. To Jason, investing is more than just a matter of handling numbers; it’s about understanding the world and the people who live in it; it’s about gaining perspectives and, ultimately, about creating a legacy that extends far beyond financial gain. The Early Spark: A Teenage Curiosity in Finance Jason’s fascination with finance sprouted like many people; he wanted to learn how to make money. “I would regularly go to the bookstore to read finance books for free, I did my fair share of ripping books out of their plastic packaging” Jason admitted with a laugh. “Initially, I just wanted to know how to make money or profits, but soon, I realised there was an art to it that I fell in love with. It’s really about learning how everything works together,” he said. The more he read about finance, the more Jason’s curiosity grew. He found that investing offered him a unique way to explore how the world operates, one company at a time. Soon enough, finance became less about money to Jason and more about satisfying a deeper thirst for knowledge about the industries, people, and global systems that shape the world.Educational Journey: From Curiosity to Academia| After completing his IGCSEs at Nobel International School, Jason decided on Sunway College for his pre-university education. He pursued a Foundation in Arts, a seemingly unconventional start for someone heading into a math-intensive career in actuarial science. “My Foundation experience really helped me broaden my horizons and understand people from other fields. I took the science stream during high school, and I didn’t really get exposed to people on the more creative side of things.”, he reflected. His time in Foundation helped him develop his ability to communicate with people from all walks of life, an invaluable asset to his career and life. Jason decided to make his transition to an actuarial science degree at Sunway University, where he was met with academic challenges of an entirely new level. Being surrounded by exceedingly bright mathematical minds, an area of study Jason has always felt confident in, made for a humbling experience that reshaped his understanding of his own strengths. “I thought I was good at math, but my classmates were on another level,” he recalled. Despite the challenges, he valued this exposure to advanced math and this lesson in humility has remained with him ever since.A project that encapsulated the dynamics Jason had with classmates involved creating an insurance product, complete with marketing strategies and pricing models. “Naturally, I took the more ‘people-facing’ side of things, while my teammates did the intricate math,” Jason reflected. This assignment reminded Jason that while technical skills are important, his strengths in communication were just as valuable.Starting His Career: Entering the World of Asset Management Entering asset management was a natural next step for Jason, where he would put his financial knowledge into action and even travel internationally to assess companies firsthand. But breaking into the field wasn’t easy. “In investment, firms usually look for people with experience, an overseas degree, or strong connections,” he explained. With only a degree in Actuarial Science at a local university to his name, Jason knew he had to find a way to separate himself from the crowd.Inspired by artists or programmers who would showcase their abilities and experience through their portfolios, Jason decided to put his deep knowledge of finance and investing to use. “I connected with people on LinkedIn and wrote research reports on stocks.” Taking such initiative was essential in displaying to employers not only his expertise but also his willingness to think outside the box and go the actual mile. It was this approach that caught the attention of abrdn, a global investment company, who, like him, valued substance over titles or university names. Now, as an investment analyst at abrdn, Jason not only evaluates stocks and market trends but also meets with CEOs and founders from many countries, gaining a unique perspective on each company’s potential. “Meeting the people who run these businesses and seeing their work environments, it’s all part of understanding their true potential.” Managing clients’ money is no light task, and Jason takes this responsibility seriously. “We’re reminded every day that it’s someone else’s money,” he shared, noting the weight that comes with his role. This accountability drives him to maintain a careful yet confident approach, balancing caution with determination as he navigates market shifts.Jason’s investment philosophy centres on a ‘business owner’ mindset, viewing each investment as a stake in a company rather than just a stock. “Think of it like owning a piece of a business; it’s about trusting the leadership and understanding the fundamentals.” Inspired by the principle that ‘genius lies in making the complex simple’, he believes that the best investments are often straightforward yet thoroughly researched.Future Goals and Personal Philosophy: Building a Legacy and Living Simply As committed as Jason is to his career in investment analysis, his ultimate goal goes beyond finance. Jason is inspired by the concept of ‘inclusive business’ and aims to start a venture that both supports disadvantaged communities and generates sustainable profit. “I want to build a business that helps people sustainably so it can keep running even after I’m gone.” For Jason, profit isn’t inherently negative; it’s simply a means to create lasting, positive change for those who need it most. This long-term vision drives him daily, motivating him to absorb everything he can about business operations and impact. Jason hopes to merge the insights he’s gained from asset management with a mission-driven approach, building an enterprise that balances profit with social good. With the rigours of a fast-paced and exhausting job, Jason’s outlook on life is refreshing. He believes in focusing on the essentials and cutting out unnecessary complications, both at work and in life. “I just want to live a simple, happy life,” he shared. Jason uses simplicities as a guiding principle, keeping his head clear amid all the complexities of this field, and it’s a mindset that he feels is getting increasingly lost in the current day and age. “When you think about it, a lot of us don’t really have as much to worry about as we think we do. Sometimes, we worry about what we believe are overwhelming problems, but they don’t even exist.”For those looking to enter the world of investing and finance, Jason has one key piece of advice: stay curious, prioritise learning and remember that investing is more than numbers. “I highly recommend One Up on Wall Street by Peter Lynch and Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits by Philip Fisher for beginners. These books helped me dive into the qualitative aspects of investment that have definitely shaped my approach.”For Jason, success comes from balancing curiosity with simplicity and embracing a grounded approach in both career and life. He also emphasised humility, encouraging newcomers to acknowledge what they don’t know and always to keep an open mind.

Beyond Profits: Leen Jason’s Path to Building a Legacy at 22

Many Malaysian students coming out of secondary school think pre-university education boils down to a Foundation or diploma programme. While these paths may be considered the norm and most popular, these structured and exam-heavy learning environments might not be the perfect fit for everyone. In fact, students with different academic strengths, learning styles, and ambitions might feel constrained by these options.Enter the Canadian International Matriculation Programme (CIMP): an increasingly popular alternative that offers a unique, flexible approach to pre-university education for students looking for something less exam-heavy and more dynamic. What Makes CIMP Stand Out? The Canadian International Matriculation Programme is rooted in the Ontario Secondary School curriculum and is recognised worldwide as equivalent to a Canadian high school diploma. Introduced to Malaysia in the 1980s, CIMP has been providing students with the opportunity to explore global university pathways. The CIMP programme emphasises continuous assessment over having one high-stakes exam to determine a student’s academic worth. Through a combination of coursework and final exams, CIMP moulds students into well-rounded individuals ready for the challenges of university life and beyond. Real Experiences: Why CIMP Works Debbie (not her real name) is a CIMP graduate currently studying law. She shared her personal experience with the AfterSchool team about the course and insights into how the programme impacted her academic journey. While recognising that certification from any accredited higher education institution will boost opportunities for people seeking to enrol into undergraduate courses, she says, “I believe taking CIMP ensured a better outcome for me as compared to other pre-university courses because it offered a broader curriculum that better prepared me for the interdisciplinary approach needed in modern higher education.”Debbie initially had concerns about switching from A-Levels to CIMP. “There was a worry, upon switching to CIMP from A-Levels, that I would not be accepted into many schools.” However, she found that many universities, especially in the UK, do recognise CIMP, and that “the first year in university is meant to equalise everyone’s experience.”One of CIMP’s greatest strengths, according to Debbie, is its flexibility. “CIMP allows students to experience a diverse range of subjects without being tied into a specific combination of subjects. For example, I had the opportunity to dive deep into Music, exploring various genres and understanding the theory and characteristics behind them, which was really interesting and fun.” She also highlighted the importance of group work: “One of the major requirements of CIMP is group work — a skill which is not really emphasised in A-Levels. I believe that this skill is the most important in the long-run when it comes to both university and work.”There is no “right” or “wrong” when it comes to choosing a tertiary programme, everyone has different learning styles and is suited to different academic experiences. However, the CIMP opens up an avenue for students who prefer a more hands-on learning approach to excel in the academic world, allowing them access to a world of opportunities that they wouldn’t have otherwise. Why CIMP Might Be YOUR Perfect Fit CIMP is designed to attract students who thrive in more hands-on, interactive, and self-directed learning environments. Let’s break down what makes this programme so appealing:A Continuous Assessment Journey: For students who dislike the pressure of high-stakes final exams, CIMP offers a welcome alternative. With 70% of the grade based on coursework and assignments, students who excel in consistent effort and prefer ongoing evaluation find this programme particularly attractive. The Balanced Curriculum You’ve Been Looking For: CIMP combines academic rigour with extracurricular opportunities, encouraging students to grow both in and out of the classroom. This blend of academic and personal development is perfect for students who value holistic education, giving them the chance to balance leadership roles, projects, and a strong academic foundation.Flexibility to Explore Your Passions: CIMP’s flexible learning style allows students to take charge of their education, offering various subject choices and pacing options. This is ideal for those who want more control over what they learn and how they learn it. The extra subject options also help broaden academic horizons, providing students with more tailored opportunities. An Interactive Classroom Like No Other: If you thrive in group projects, presentations, and interactive lessons, CIMP’s collaborative environment will suit you well. The program fosters critical thinking and participation, making it perfect for students who prefer dynamic learning environments over traditional lecture-based instruction.A Global Perspective for a Global Future: With its focus on international issues and cross-cultural understanding, CIMP is perfect for students who want to engage with the world at large. The curriculum encourages global awareness, making it ideal for those who aim to study or work abroad and who are interested in developing a global outlook.Leadership Development: CIMP isn’t just about getting good grades—it’s about developing leadership skills. The programme offers ample opportunities to build leadership skills through various activities and group work, making it the perfect platform for ambitious students eager to take on roles that challenge them beyond academics.A Supportive Environment Tailored to Your Success: For students seeking a nurturing and inclusive environment, CIMP offers an ideal academic setting. The programme places a heavy emphasis on student welfare and guidance, ensuring everyone feels supported throughout their journey. Whether it’s through one-on-one counselling or a strong community spirit, CIMP makes sure no student is left behind.Just as “Legitimate” as Traditional Paths: Some students may worry that CIMP isn’t as “legitimate” as other pre-university programmes like A-levels or Foundation courses. Yet in truth, CIMP offers an internationally recognised qualification that is respected by universities worldwide. Whether you’re planning to pursue further studies in Malaysia, Canada, or beyond, CIMP stands strong as a pre-university option that opens doors to a global education. In short, the Canadian International Matriculation Programme offers an exciting alternative for students who want more than just a traditional pre-university experience. It’s a path for those who value flexibility, personal growth, and a more hands-on approach to learning—one that prepares you for both university and life.

This challenge provides candidates of the CMT Programme and students from partner academic institutions, like APU, a real-world platform to hone their technical analysis skills, mirroring the practices of top investment professionals.APU's selection as a CMT Academic Partner Programme Institute underscores its steadfast commitment to preparing students for the rigours of the financial world through career-oriented education and practical learning experiences. Mentored by Dr Ahmad Danial Zainudin, a Senior Lecturer at APU's School of Accounting and Finance (SoAF), Lai Shu Juan and Paveedra Devi stood out among 552 participants representing 27 countries and 32 universities.Throughout an intense eight-week virtual competition, the duo utilised financial analysis software, particularly Optuma, to simulate real-world investing scenarios. Their journey commenced with a comprehensive analysis of the NASDAQ-100 stock index, delving into macroeconomic influences and microeconomic impacts on share prices. Understanding the intricacies of investment risk tolerance and effective money management laid a robust foundation for their strategies.Shu Juan strategically opted for sectors known for lower volatility, such as retail and consumer staples, aiming for stability amidst market fluctuations. In contrast, Paveedra adopted a diversified approach, allocating funds across technology, healthcare, finance, and consumer goods sectors. Her portfolio balanced growth potential with dividend-yielding stocks, a testament to her risk management skills. The competition demanded rigorous adherence to technical analysis principles. Each participant was required to submit a minimum of 16 trade ideas, supported by detailed rationales encompassing entry points, target prices, and stop-loss orders. Moreover, participants had to provide chart analyses to substantiate their decisions. One standout metric in the challenge was the Max Drawdown, a measure of portfolio risk defined as the maximum decline in value from a peak before a new peak is reached. A lower drawdown signifies a more stable and resilient investment strategy. Lai Shu Juan and Paveedra Devi achieved remarkable results, posting a Max Drawdown of 0.67%, surpassing renowned institutions like the University of Toronto Rotman School of Management (2.28%) and Taylor's University (2.57%).Reflected on their experience, Shu Juan shared, “Participating in this competition has deepened my understanding of professional investment strategies." Paveedra added, "I've gained practical insights into decision-making, risk management, and trading essentials."Dr Ahmad Danial Zainudin, reflecting on his students' accomplishments, noted their exceptional passion and commitment to mastering investment strategies and market dynamics. "Despite their limited trading experience, their eagerness to learn and apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting was evident throughout the competition," remarked Dr Danial.Associate Professor Dr Chong Lee Lee, Head of APU's School of Accounting and Finance, emphasised the significance of this achievement within the context of APU's academic programmes. "The success of Shu Juan and Paveedra underscores the efficacy of our curriculum, which bridges theoretical understanding with hands-on application," noted Dr Chong. "Their triumph exemplifies the calibre of talent our institution nurtures, setting a high standard for future finance professionals."

In alignment with its commitment to global educational advancements and the fortification of its digital learning ecosystem, the Asia Pacific University of Technology & Innovation (APU) proudly welcomes Dr Kelly McKenna, an Associate Professor in the Adult Education and Training Master's Degree Programme at Colorado State University (CSU), USA, as a Fulbright Scholar. This collaboration not only augments the educational experience for APU students and faculty but also solidifies APU’s stature as a premier institution in technology and innovation.
Dr Kelly McKenna, Fulbright Scholar at APU.
Originating from the vision of United States Senator J. William Fulbright in 1946, the Fulbright Programme stands as a beacon of educational exchange, aimed at fostering peace and understanding globally. Acknowledged as one of the most prestigious scholarships in the USA, it extends opportunities for study, research, and teaching across various disciplines. Dr Kelly, affiliated with CSU, a prolific producer of Fulbright scholars and students, embodies the essence of this esteemed programme.Dr Kelly's tenure at APU, spanning from January to June 2024, entails collaboration with APU’s Digital Learning Hub (DLH), led by Professor Dr Abtar Darshan Singh. Their joint efforts encompass cross-cultural exchange, research endeavours, and the development of innovative curricula tailored to APU’s diverse learner community. To gain insights into Dr Kelly's experiences and goals during her Fulbright tenure, we had the privilege of conducting an interview in late February, one month into her official engagement:Q: What motivated you to apply for the Fulbright Scholarship to work in Malaysia, specifically at APU?A: The Fulbright Scholar Award is a prestigious honour in the United States. Colorado State University, where I teach, is renowned for producing Fulbright scholars and students. The educational exchange has been a consistent thread in my career, making this opportunity to engage in another culture and learn from experts akin to my own work highly appealing. My interactions with the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE) introduced me to Prof. Dr Abtar Darshan Singh and APU. Impressed by APU's accolades and its leadership in online education and technology, I couldn’t pass up the chance to work with Prof. Abtar.Q: What are your plans both at work and after work during your time in Malaysia?A: Over the six months at APU, I'll collaborate with the Digital Learning Hub, focusing on the design of the new MEd in Learning Design and Technology. I aim to foster collaborative experiences between APU and CSU programmes. Additionally, I'm co-developing the Learning Innovation and Teaching Excellence (LITE) certificate programme for APU lecturers, emphasising innovation and teaching excellence. Beyond work, I'm immersing myself in local activities, traditions, and experiences, taking full advantage of Malaysia’s beauty and welcoming community.Q: In your role as an associate professor of adult education, what expertise do you aim to contribute to the APU community?A: Within the graduate programme for adult educators at CSU, I specialise in equipping individuals to effectively teach adults across various contexts such as corporate training, higher education, basic education for adult learners who seek alternative learning paths, language instruction, and professional development. Many of my students are seasoned professionals in their respective fields or subject matter experts who are tasked with instructing others but lack formal pedagogical training. They enrol in my programme, which emphasises practical application tailored to their roles. This dynamic allows me to gain insight into diverse professional landscapes as they apply instructional design and facilitation techniques to their specific contexts. My research primarily centres on distance education, particularly within online environments. I investigate aspects such as community building, engagement strategies, and the integration of technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences. My focus lies predominantly on asynchronous online or open-distance learning methodologies. Given APU's endeavour to incorporate more online modules into its curriculum, I aspire to contribute to this initiative during my tenure here. My research approach typically involves mixed methods, often incorporating learning analytics to provide comprehensive insights.Q: Would you like to share some concrete plans or planned activities here at APU?A: Besides working on the LITE certificate at APU, I plan to work on some research endeavours with Prof. Abtar, hopefully, including some comparative work between the US and Malaysia. I’d like to apply a framework derived from best practices in online design and delivery and analyse how this framework may differ between the two countries. Applying a framework for online teaching is a great way to ensure a successful experience for both instructors and learners. Moreover, I hope to engage with the Digital Learning Hub’s work around generative AI. The application of AI in education is very different in the United States, so I think this is a great learning opportunity. I’m also engaging with PhD students here at APU and supporting scholarship efforts by the Digital Learning Hub, including research and publications. This is such a wonderful opportunity for me to connect with individuals across APU and the local community and learn with and from all of you. I am happy to contribute in whatever innovative ways I can and look forward to any new opportunities that may arise.Q: What goals do you have in mind for creating optimal learning environments and fostering successful student experiences in adult and higher distance education?A: My career at CSU, a research-intensive university, allows me to participate in experiences like the Fulbright while supporting positive experiences for online facilitators and learners. My goal is personal growth through educational exchange and international experiential teaching. Success, for me, is retiring from my current faculty position while continually contributing to initiatives that align with the university's mission. Being at APU provides me with new perspectives and knowledge to bring back to my university.Welcoming Dr Kelly McKenna as a Fulbright Scholar, the APU community is delighted to embrace her commitment to educational exchange and expertise in online education. This promises a mutually enriching collaboration between APU and CSU, poised to make a meaningful contribution to the global landscape of higher education.
