There, she learned the intricacies of food procurement and the entire kitchen operation, from sourcing ingredients to serving meals to patients. &ldquo;We had two assignments during that time &mdash; creating vegetarian menus for diabetic patients and working on a quality improvement project to enhance the food service.&rdquo;Next, her community placement took her to Klinik Kesihatan in Seremban, where she provided outpatient counselling to patients. She and her group also gave a talk on diet control for gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) to pregnant mothers, an experience that deepened her understanding of public health nutrition.Her clinical placement was at Hospital Tuanku Ja&rsquo;afar in Seremban, a teaching hospital partnered with IMU. Here, Zi Jie managed patients with various acute and chronic conditions requiring dietetic-related services. &ldquo;All these experiences allowed us to learn how to be competent dietitians, providing the best care by using up-to-date information and recommendations.&rdquo;This comprehensive practicum solidified her passion for dietetics, leaving her more determined than ever to pursue a career in the field.Beyond technical skills, IMU&rsquo;s environment nurtured the development of vital interpersonal qualities that would prove crucial in her career. One such skill was time management. Zi Jie, as part of a pioneering team, helped launch Malaysia&rsquo;s first-ever student-led dietetic clinic at IMU during her final year. The experience was demanding, as it required balancing hospital work with late-night discussions about the clinic, but it was also gratifying. &ldquo;I always enjoyed learning outside of lecture classes, as it helped me strengthen my soft skills and broaden my social circle.&rdquo;Another key skill Zi Jie developed was leadership. He pursued a Foundation in Arts, a seemingly unconventional start for someone heading into a math-intensive career in actuarial science. &ldquo;My Foundation experience really helped me broaden my horizons and understand people from other fields. I took the science stream during high school, and I didn&rsquo;t really get exposed to people on the more creative side of things.&rdquo;, he reflected. With only a degree in Actuarial Science at a local university to his name, Jason knew he had to find a way to separate himself from the crowd.Inspired by artists or programmers who would showcase their abilities and experience through their portfolios, Jason decided to put his deep knowledge of finance and investing to use. &ldquo;I connected with people on LinkedIn and wrote research reports on stocks.&rdquo; Taking such initiative was essential in displaying to employers not only his expertise but also his willingness to think outside the box and go the actual mile. Their journey commenced with a comprehensive analysis of the NASDAQ-100 stock index, delving into macroeconomic influences and microeconomic impacts on share prices. Understanding the intricacies of investment risk tolerance and effective money management laid a robust foundation for their strategies.Shu Juan strategically opted for sectors known for lower volatility, such as retail and consumer staples, aiming for stability amidst market fluctuations. In contrast, Paveedra adopted a diversified approach, allocating funds across technology, healthcare, finance, and consumer goods sectors. Impressed by APU&#39;s accolades and its leadership in online education and technology, I couldn&rsquo;t pass up the chance to work with Prof. Abtar.Q: What are your plans both at work and after work during your time in Malaysia?A: Over the six months at APU, I&#39;ll collaborate with the Digital Learning Hub, focusing on the design of the new MEd in Learning Design and Technology. I aim to foster collaborative experiences between APU and CSU programmes. This dynamic allows me to gain insight into diverse professional landscapes as they apply instructional design and facilitation techniques to their specific contexts.My research primarily centres on distance education, particularly within online environments. I investigate aspects such as community building, engagement strategies, and the integration of technology to enhance teaching and learning experiences. My focus lies predominantly on asynchronous online or open-distance learning methodologies. Given APU&#39;s endeavour to incorporate more online modules into its curriculum, I aspire to contribute to this initiative during my tenure here. My research approach typically involves mixed methods, often incorporating learning analytics to provide comprehensive insights.Q: Would you like to share some concrete plans or planned activities here at APU?A: Besides working on the LITE certificate at APU, I plan to work on some research endeavours with Prof. Abtar, hopefully, including some comparative work between the US and Malaysia. I&rsquo;d like to apply a framework derived from best practices in online design and delivery and analyse how this framework may differ between the two countries. Applying a framework for online teaching is a great way to ensure a successful experience for both instructors and learners.&nbsp;Moreover, I hope to engage with the Digital Learning Hub&rsquo;s work around generative AI. The application of AI in education is very different in the United States, so I think this is a great learning opportunity.&nbsp;I&rsquo;m also engaging with PhD students here at APU and supporting scholarship efforts by the Digital Learning Hub, including research and publications. This is such a wonderful opportunity for me to connect with individuals across APU and the local community and learn with and from all of you. I am happy to contribute in whatever innovative ways I can and look forward to any new opportunities that may arise.Q: What goals do you have in mind for creating optimal learning environments and fostering successful student experiences in adult and higher distance education?A: My career at CSU, a research-intensive university, allows me to participate in experiences like the Fulbright while supporting positive experiences for online facilitators and learners. My goal is personal growth through educational exchange and international experiential teaching. Success, for me, is retiring from my current faculty position while continually contributing to initiatives that align with the university&#39;s mission. All of the preparation leading up to the big day, followed by the wait for the results, can be just as stressful as the exam itself. Despite the fact that we have only recently returned from vacation and are still in vacation mode, the end of the semester is rapidly approaching. That means tests and exams are on the way. It&#39;s impossible to get rid of them, whether you like them or not. Even though you&#39;ll never feel truly relieved during exam season, there are some strategies that can help you cope with stress and anxiety.The first step when it comes acing your test is to always review back what you have learnt in the classroom. There are multiple ways that you can do it, for instance, memorising notes, listening to lesson audios, flashcards and even tutoring. As time passes, our memories fade. That is why it is critical to review information on a regular basis. The more valuable or complex the information, the greater the effort required. It is crucial to go over everything you have learned. When you review information, you are bringing it back to mind and strengthening your brain&#39;s connections. You are starting to move from short-term to long-term memory. The more times you review the information, the easier it is to recall it, and the information becomes more long-term. You will never forget the information if you do not act quickly!Next, it is a common belief that it is best for you to jam pack everything you have learned. However, this could not be further from the truth. While studying by itself is a crucial step in acing your test, one must remember that just like how our body gets tired from overexercising, our brain is not an exception to tiredness. Students oftentimes overwork themselves by studying non-stop with the mindset that there is no such thing as over studying. It is common knowledge that students are always associated with sleep depravity. Bear in mind that when we are sleep deprived, our focus, attention, and vigilance deteriorate, making receiving information more difficult. Not sleeping is your worst enemy! When we think of productivity or effectiveness, we usually picture someone who is actively working rather than resting. Rest, on the other hand, is an important part of working well. Breaks, such as going for a walk or exercising, improve our alertness, focus, and motivation. They can help you avoid procrastination and decision fatigue. They help us be more productive and even creative. Working without taking breaks for an extended period of time can lead to burnout.&nbsp;Did you know that healthy minds live in healthy bodies? Never forget your breakfast. Ever heard of the saying &lsquo; Eat breakfast like a king&rsquo;? Never underestimate the power of a good and healthy breakfast. According to research, students and pupils who eat breakfast perform better in exams. Slow-release carbohydrates, such as whole rolled porridge oats, whole grain bread, or low-sugar muesli, provide slow-release energy for the best breakfast. Add protein-rich food, such as milk, yoghurt, or eggs, to feel fuller for longer. Aim to include a portion of a food rich in long-chain Omega-3 fats, such as smoked mackerel, on exam day, as they are thought to have brain-boosting properties. Even though you might feel really nervous and anxious, make sure you eat a healthy and delicious breakfast on the day of the exam (or any other day). A nutritious breakfast fuels your body, balances your blood sugar levels, and speeds up your metabolism. Your brain requires water, fat, glucose, and vitamins to function properly. An iced coffee, doughnut, or energy drink will not suffice.Be sure that you know how to organise your time and yourself. Preparation is all about the timing. Doing things at the last minute is not much of a preparation now is it not? Exam preparation is all about taking your time. Rushing things out will only lead to unnecessary stress. While some students appear to thrive on last-minute cramming, it is widely acknowledged that this is not the best way to approach an exam. Create a timetable for your studies to help you manage your time. Make a list of the exams you have and the dates you have to take them. Then plan your research accordingly.
