What is Mathematics?

Mathematics is the study of number, quantity and space.

Do you love numbers? Not just at school, your love affair with numbers follows you home, as you used math to figure out just about anything you need in life. How much money you’ll need to make it through the week and still afford to go to the mamak with friends, whether you can buy an extra nugget with your nasi lemak at school, everything is sorted out in your head by numbers. Do you feel math is a science of its own, and a language that very few speak? If you do feel this way, then pe

What skills do you need for a course in Mathematics?

Good with Computers

You know that when a computer stops responding, there’s a tonne more you could other than pressing Ctrl+Alt+Tab repeatedly before flinging your computer into the wall. You may not be an expert in the field, but you’re more than equipped to deal with the software and hardware aspects of a PC.

Dedicated

You never give up, no matter what. Even when your futsal team was down 3-0 in the final, you spurred them on. Did you win? Probably not, but you never gave up. Mathematics would require some effort on your part, especially for those tough problems and equations that need prrofing on top on answers.

Good with Numbers

If you didn’t expect this, perhaps you shouldn’t really pursue mathematics (Kidding!). You’re a walking, talking human calculator. Maybe you’re able to multiply any number by another on command (Quick, what’s 34 x 678?).

Logical

Mathematics is not about making preposterous claims and talking in the abstract. It is about getting down to the basics and proving yourself right. While science may have certain grey areas where there is room to argue, mathematics is concrete and absolute.
