Web designers or developers create websites, mostly interactive and functional, for clients. The sites support the clients’ business hence its crucial for web designers or developers to understand their clients’ needs and business goals. Web designers or developers design system models using technical charts and software, develop the web system/ software, and test the system as well as debug errors. Part of their job is to conduct user acceptance tests with clients/users once the web system is rolled out.

Market Demand

The expansion of e-commerce is expected to be the main driver of Web developer job growth in the next decade. As more companies offer or expand their online retail presence, more Web developers will be needed to build the websites visited by consumers to purchase their favourite products.

Web designers or developers usually find employment in the IT departments of large companies or organisations as well public relations agencies. Those who have enough experience in web design usually go freelance.

Education

To become a web designer or developer, one must have at least a diploma or degree in IT or computer science. An ideal web designers must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and have good programming skills. Web designers/developers who specialise in flash animation, database programming, search engine optimisation and online community management are also in demand.
