Taylor’s University has made history by introducing Malaysia’s first Bachelor in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE) (Honours) programme, marking a significant milestone in the country’s higher education landscape. Inspired by the prestigious PPE programme at Oxford University, this three-year interdisciplinary degree is designed to equip students with a deep understanding of governance, economic policies, and philosophical thought while preparing them for diverse career paths in policymaking, business, and academia.
What Makes Taylor’s PPE Programme Unique?
While PPE programmes are well-established in Western universities, Taylor’s University has tailored its curriculum to address Malaysia’s political and socio-economic context. The programme integrates courses on political economy, public policy analysis, ethics in governance, and applied research methods, ensuring that graduates develop both theoretical and practical knowledge relevant to today’s world.
One of the key features of the programme is its focus on real-world applications. Students will engage with case studies, debates and hands-on projects that prepare them to tackle issues like social justice, sustainability, and economic development. This approach ensures that graduates are not only academically proficient but also “job-ready” with critical thinking and analytical skills highly valued in the workforce.
An Industry-Backed Academic Experience
A significant aspect of Taylor’s PPE programme is its Industry Advisory Panel (IAP), which consists of some of Malaysia’s most influential policymakers, economists, and academics. Led by Professor Dr. Ong Kian Ming, the Pro Vice-Chancellor for External Engagement at Taylor’s University and former Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, the panel includes:
Khairy Jamaluddin – Former Health Minister and an Oxford PPE graduate
Tony Pua – Former MP and political secretary to Malaysia’s Finance Minister
Professor Dr. Farish A. Noor – Renowned historian and political scientist
Dr. Tricia Yeoh – Former CEO of IDEAS and governance expert
Dr. Lee Hwok-Aun – Senior fellow at the ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute
Shahril Hamdan – Former Economic Director in the Prime Minister’s Office
These experts will mentor students through guest lectures, industry engagement sessions, and research collaborations. Their involvement ensures that students gain first-hand insights into policymaking, economic strategies, and governance, giving them a competitive edge in their careers.
Shaping the Future of Policy and Governance in Malaysia
Taylor’s University has strategically positioned this programme to be globally relevant while addressing Malaysia’s unique challenges. As the demand for multi-disciplinary graduates grows, the PPE programme prepares students to navigate an increasingly complex world where economics, governance, and ethical considerations intersect.
Additionally, the programme also aligns with Malaysia’s Vision 2030, which aims to develop a knowledge-based economy driven by strong leadership and governance. By fostering analytical thinkers and policy strategists, Taylor’s PPE graduates will be well-equipped to contribute to both national and international discussions on political and economic affairs.
A Degree That Opens Doors to Diverse Career Opportunities
PPE graduates are highly sought after across various industries, including government agencies, financial institutions, think tanks, NGOs, and consulting firms. With expertise in multiple disciplines, graduates can pursue careers as policy analysts, economic consultants, journalists, diplomats, or researchers. The versatility of the degree also makes it an ideal foundation for further studies in law, business, and international relations.
With Donald Trump securing a second term in office, his policies on immigration and international relations are once again in the spotlight. While much attention has been placed on how UK universities might benefit, there are important considerations for students from Southeast Asia, including ..
