Hello Tracy,

A forensic psychologist practices psychology within the criminal justice system and civil courts. Their interests are to: understand why certain behaviors in criminals occur, try to minimize and prevent such behaviors, and use the psychological principles and use it to narrow down a suspect list or provide a motive for a crime.

For more information on what forensic psychologists do, do have a read of an article written by Career Explorer. The article, What does a forensic psychologist do, explains in detail what they do and the workplace for a forensic psychologist.

If are interested in studying the course, do have a look at Studying Psychology in Malaysia. One of the branches listed in the page would be Forensic Psychology. The page has a brief summary of what psychology is, the respective branches, the subjects you will study, the entry requirements, an educational pathway, the top recruiters after graduation and institutions where you can study the desired course.

Hope you find this help and good luck!

Hi Lee Wei Theng,

The typical entry requirements for a Diploma in Psychology is at least 2 Full passes in relevant subjects in STPM, or 2 Passes in relevant subjects in A-Levels, or other equivalent qualifications. You may refer to our guide to studying Psychology by clicking here.

You can also view a full list of universities offering psychology by clicking here. You can use the filter on the left-hand side and choose 'Diploma' to view only Diploma courses.

Hope this helps!

Hi Nhivetha,

A Medicine course requires you to have prior knowledge of the three core science subjects: Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. On top of that, you must have studied Mathematics and/or Additional Mathematics as well.

If you did not take these subjects prior to your Psychology course, you will have to retake your SPM with these subjects so that you can proceed to the Medicine pathway.

Hope this helps, good luck!

Hi Nurul Liyana,

There are currently no diploma programmes in Psychology offered in public universities. Hence, you will have to pursue the said programme at a private university.

However, if you would rather opt for a public university, you will first have to undergo a pre-u programme such as STPM (either science or arts stream). The subjects that you would be required to score (at least a Credit) during SPM are Mathematics/Additional Mathematics, Science, and English.

For more information about the Psychology course, do refer to this link.

Hope this helps, and good luck!

Hi Diviya!

That is a great idea! You have several options to pursue Clinical Psychology for your education. You can either do A Levels or if you have already set your mind on a certain university that you would like to do your degree in, you could just do a Pre-University course such as a Foundation offered by that university and proceed to your degree in the same place.

Do note that in order to become a registered Clinical Psychologist, you'll have to proceed to a Master's degree after a basic Psychology degree.

As for job prospects, Psychology is a blooming field at the moment and mental health is gaining more attention than ever before. Furthermore, a Psychology degree is very versatile in terms of job prospects. A lecturer, human resource manager, and corporate communications executive are just some of the many career options that you can consider besides a psychologist. You can refer here for more information in regards to Psychology related job options.

Hope this helps!

Hi Aya,

Occupational therapy actually falls under psychology, so you don't really have to choose between the two at the end of the day. This is because, in an Occupational Therapy degree, you would be learning elements of psychology in your modules. Of course you can always take a general degree in psychology and and then later pursue a Masters in Occupational Therapy, or even take a psychology degree and major in Occupational Therapy, but not many institutions offer this kind of flexibility. You can also take a psychology degree and choose to intern at an institution that practices occupational therapy to gain exposure into the industry.

If you are interested in a general psychology degree, IUMW and Raffles University Iskandar both offer these courses. Just fill in the bar on the right, and one of our counselors will get in touch with you.

Hope this helps!

Hi Aishah,

Fret not! You don't need to wait to pursue your Master's to get into the psychology field. If you get at least a CGPA of 2.00 in your diploma studies and have achieved a C in SPM level Math and Science, then you're eligible for the degree!

If you are interested, IUMW and Raffles University Iskandar both offera degree in psycholgy. Just fill in the bar on the right, and one of our counselors will get in touch with you.

Thank you for your response. The information you gave is very useful. Let’s say if I go for my bachelor degree in psychology and after this degree I would like to further my master degree in Speech Science in UKM, is it possible? What are the basic requirements needed for this course?

Hi Nicole,

As long as your psychology degree was rooted in science-related subjects (i.e. a Bachelor of Science in Psychology as opposed to a Bachelor of Arts), you will be able to pursue a master's degree in speech pathology.

However, do note that speech pathology is not offered as a clinical master's course in Malaysia; there are very few universities that offer courses in speech pathology. For example, UKM offers both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in research in Hearing and Speech. Besides that, USM offers a bachelor's degree in speech pathology.

Hope this helps!
