Student Life | Malaysia’s No.1 Higher Education Website

Ask most people what a student council does, and you'll hear the same shortlist: plan events, hand out free merch, pose for orientation photos. We at Afterschool wanted to see what actually happens behind that, so we spent a day with the Student Representative Council (SRC) team at Multimedia University (MMU), following one exco member from the morning rush to the afternoon crunch. We expected event planning. What we got looked a lot more like a day inside a small company.
What Does a Student Representative Council (SRC) Actually Do?
An SRC is the official, student-elected body that represents students to university management. At MMU, representatives are voted in every year to become the voice between thousands of students and the people who run the campus. The job breaks into three parts:

Student advocacy: collecting concerns and pushing them up to management.

University liaison: acting as the official channel between students and administration.

Event and budget oversight: planning campus-wide initiatives and managing the money behind them.

Events are the visible 10 per cent. The rest, however, is an experience that can significantly boost your resume..
9:00 AM – The Campus Walkthrough: Stakeholder Management in Action
The day starts on foot. Every few minutes, someone stopped our host: a student with a facilities complaint, a club rep chasing funding, a junior needing advice. Each needed a different approach. The frustrated student needed to feel heard. The club rep needed a clear answer. Same person, three modes, ten minutes. That's stakeholder management, even if nobody on campus calls it that. Active listening and feedback-gathering are not soft skills. They're the foundation of how account managers and team leads operate all day.
11:30 AM – Inside the Council Room: Real Responsibility Under Pressure
By late morning, we sat in on an internal discussion: a campus-wide initiative, a fixed budget, a deadline that wasn't moving. We tried to contribute and quickly realised how out of our depth we were. Every clever idea ran into a constraint we hadn't considered. That's the part nobody warns you about. Student leadership isn't about having good ideas. It's about having ideas that survive reality, then owning the result. That's real-world accountability, years before most people meet it at work.
How Joining the SRC Prepares You for the Corporate World
A degree gets you shortlisted. The evidence that you can operate with people gets you hired. Here are leadership skills the SRC builds:

Diplomacy and negotiation: Pitching to management is negotiation with real stakes.

Crisis and conflict management: Handling anxious or competing groups under pressure.

Project and budget management: Owning a timeline, a budget, and a team, then being judged on delivery.

None of these show up on a transcript, but are revealed in interviews.
Is Joining Student Leadership Worth It for University Students?
Yes, if you go in with your eyes open. Balancing SRC work with academics is genuinely hard. But you graduate with a degree plus management experience, your resume becomes a story instead of a list, and you build confidence that compounds. Once you've made your case to university management, a job interview feels a lot smaller.
The Takeaway
University is an incubation space: a low-risk place to lead, fail, recover, and grow before any of it hits a payslip. If you're on the sidelines, look into the clubs, committees, and leadership opportunities at MMU and universities like it. The most valuable thing you build at university might not be your GPA. It might be the person you become while chasing it.

What Does a Student Council Do? A Day Inside MMU's SRC

We Spent a Day Shadowing a Student Representative Council. It Looked a Lot Like a Full-Time Job

Nathanael, first from left and Alden, third from left, at the Singapore Invitational Meet 2026

An unexpected email gave two KYUEM students, Alden and Nathanael, the opportunity to represent Malaysia at the International Economics Olympiad (IEO) in Singapore. After performing well at the Malaysia Economics Olympiad, both were selected for the national team. What followed was an experience that challenged them beyond their A-Level studies and saw Team Malaysia win two gold awards.
The Email That Changed Everything
Neither student expected to be selected. For Alden, who was participating in the competition for the first time, the news came as a surprise."It was a very surreal moment for me," he recalls.Nathanael was sitting in class when the email arrived. He was equally surprised but excited about representing Malaysia and meeting students from around the world who shared his interest in economics.
Balancing Olympiad Preparation with A-Levels
Alden on the left, Nathanael on the rightPreparing for an international competition while studying for A-Levels was not easy. For Alden, preparations coincided with his AS Level examinations. He had to manage his time between revision, coursework and Olympiad preparation.Nathanael faced a different challenge. Although A-Level Economics gave him a strong foundation, the Olympiad required him to approach problems differently and apply concepts beyond the classroom syllabus. Both students had to adjust to these demands while keeping up with their studies.
Twenty-Four Hours, One Goal
One of the most demanding moments came during the team-based business case challenge.Team Malaysia had just 24 hours to research a business problem, analyse data, develop recommendations and prepare a presentation for the judges. With so much to complete, most team members had very little sleep.Their efforts paid off when Team Malaysia received the Gold Award for the Case Study Presentation, recognising their analysis, recommendations and presentation.Nathanael, first from the left and Alden, 2nd from the right. The team also secured the Gold Award for Best Overall Performance Team, based on their combined results across the individual and team components. For Nathanael, the challenge was memorable because it allowed him to apply economics to a real-world situation. Instead of answering examination questions, he and his teammates had to think like business consultants, analysing a problem and presenting possible solutions.
Why Teamwork Made the Difference
According to Alden, teamwork was a major reason behind their success. Each team member brought different strengths. Some were better at financial calculations, while others excelled in economic analysis, business strategy or presentations.By combining their abilities, they were able to tackle the business case together rather than relying on one person's knowledge. The experience taught Alden how important it was to recognise others' strengths and work towards a common goal.
Learning Beyond the Syllabus
Beyond economics, both students gained skills they could carry into future experiences. For Alden, the biggest lesson was resilience. He learnt to stay composed when facing setbacks, adapt to unexpected challenges and continue working towards his goals.Nathanael, meanwhile, developed greater confidence in communicating his ideas. The Olympiad required him to explain economic concepts and recommendations clearly to teammates, judges and audiences, helping him become a more confident speaker and presenter.
The Support Behind Every Achievement
Alden and Nathanael also credited their teachers and friends at KYUEM for supporting them throughout their journey.Their teachers helped by answering difficult questions, providing guidance beyond the A-Level syllabus and encouraging them to explore opportunities outside the classroom.Friends and peers also played an important role. Their encouragement gave both students the confidence to take on challenges they might otherwise have overlooked. For both students, having a supportive community at KYUEM made a difference as they prepared for an international competition.
One Opportunity Can Change Everything
When asked what advice they would give other students, Alden and Nathanael had a similar message: don't be afraid to try.Coming from a STEM background, Alden never expected an economics competition would lead him to represent Malaysia internationally.Nathanael also encouraged students to explore unfamiliar opportunities, even when they seem intimidating.Their experiences showed how trying something new can lead to unexpected achievements, friendships and opportunities.
More Than Medals, More Than a Competition
For Alden and Nathanael, the International Economics Olympiad was about more than winning awards. It gave them the chance to represent Malaysia, meet students from different countries and apply what they had learnt beyond the classroom. Most importantly, they returned with new experiences and skills that would stay with them long after the competition.
Ready to Write Your Own Success Story?
The achievements of Alden and Nathanael are a testament to what can happen when talented students are given the right opportunities, guidance, and support. At KYUEM, students are encouraged to go beyond the classroom through academic competitions, leadership opportunities, research initiatives, and university preparation programmes that help them reach their full potential.Whether it's representing Malaysia on the international stage, gaining admission to top universities worldwide, or discovering new passions and possibilities, every journey begins with a single step.Applications for the January 2027 Intake at KYUEM are now open. The January Intake offers students an excellent opportunity to begin their A-Level journey earlier in the year, benefit from a supportive academic environment, and work towards their university ambitions with a clear head start. If a single email could open the door to an international achievement for Alden and Nathanael, imagine where your first step could take you.Apply now for the January 2027 Intake and start your own success story at KYUEM. 🚀

This was the second time the Bachelor of Commerce student had taken part in the competition, having been a semi-finalist in last year’s EY YTPY. Both times, he was encouraged to participate by his lecturer, Ms Suzzane Poh Shuh Chen. The annual competition requires finalists to prepare and deliver presentations based on provided case studies, testing their skills before a judging panel. Paired with a Q&A session, the competition allowed participants to showcase their commercial awareness and technical tax prowess.“I was definitely feeling a bit lost last year,” he recalls, “but the experience helped me find my footing this year,” Karanjot shared. And finding his footing he did — with guidance from Ms. Poh, Karanjot made time to prepare his presentation amidst his final-year studies and preparations. While balancing his responsibilities was a challenging feat, he credits a solid support system of lecturers and friends for seeing him through. The final stage of the competition was held on 7 - 8 July 2026, where Karanjot delivered his presentation with no expectation of going home with a prize.“I was very self-conscious of all my mistakes, so I was extremely surprised and overjoyed when my name was called. I realised the best parts of my presentation were when I let go of the expectation of winning and focused on just trying my best,” he said. “The thing I valued the most from the competition was not the accomplishment or the prize, but rather the experience from the competition and meeting new and friendly people,” he added.Alongside Karanjot, four other TARCians were among the top ten in the competition: Wong Jing Hui, Ng Fu Hui, Zhao Miaoqi, and Lim Li Yuin.

Teams were assigned real-world logistics cases that they needed to analyse, strategise, plan, and present their solutions to a judging panel. For Sheng Qi, the opportunity to collaborate with his peers from other countries was an exciting and challenging experience.“My teammates were from Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, so we all had very different approaches and understanding about how to solve the task. It taught me the importance of clear communication, especially with others from diverse backgrounds, to work together cohesively. Thanks to that, we managed to come to a unified understanding about the case problem and formulated a solution that all of us were confident in. I believe our cohesive teamwork was instrumental in our success as a team,” said Sheng Qi, a former student of SMK Sri Permata.Fellow TARCian Zhong Qi, who teamed up with students from Taiwan and Vietnam, believed his TAR UMT study experience prepared him well to take on the challenges during this competition.“My lecturers, especially Dr Chong Chu Le, ensured that I was well-versed in the theories to strengthen my basic knowledge and provided an environment that encouraged me to solve real industry problems. Those lessons gave me a strong foundation that was instrumental to my performance and contribution to the team doing so well in such a highly competitive international competition,” said the former student of SMK Taman Desa Tebrau.

Hard work, precision and perseverance culminated in national recognition for TAR UMT’s Bachelor of Quantity Surveying (Hons) graduate, Lim Jing Ru. Jing Ru was honoured with the Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia (RISM) Annual Gold Medal Award for Best Student 2026 – Quantity Surveying Best Student Award on 26 June 2026."I was truly honoured and surprised when I received the news. This recognition reflects not only the hard work and dedication I put into my studies, but also the guidance and support I received throughout my academic journey. I thank my faculty and lecturers for seeing my potentials and helping me develop them well, leading to my recommendation for the award," said Jing Ru.Jing Ru who hails from Sekolah Menengah Jenis Kebangsaan (SMJK) Chong Hwa and is a TAR UMT Merit Scholarship recipient, constantly challenged herself to deepen her understanding beyond the classroom. One of her most memorable experiences was attending different tutorial groups by coordinating with tutors' schedules, enabling her to learn from different teaching approaches and gain a broader perspective on the subject matter.Another highlight of her university journey was visiting the construction site of TAR UMT Arena. Witnessing the project under construction allowed her to connect classroom theories with real-world practices, reinforcing her understanding of construction technology, cost management and project execution through first-hand industry exposure. Her passion for embracing the future of the profession was reflected in her Final Year Project titled ‘Assessing the Impacts of Digital Technologies on the Emerging Roles of the Quantity Surveying Profession in Malaysia.’ The research explored how technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM), artificial intelligence, cloud computing and digital quantity surveying tools are reshaping the traditional role of quantity surveyors."My findings showed that these technologies can significantly improve accuracy, efficiency and collaboration throughout a project's life cycle. More importantly, I found that the role of quantity surveyors is evolving beyond traditional measurement and cost preparation to becoming strategic advisors who contribute to better decision-making across every stage of a project. At the same time, my research revealed that although many industry professionals recognise the benefits of digital technologies, their adoption is still at a developing stage. This highlights the gap between awareness and practical implementation, and reinforces the need for future quantity surveyors to continuously upskill and embrace lifelong learning to remain relevant in an evolving industry,” she mentioned."Beyond my research, my internship gave me the opportunity to see these concepts in practice. During my internship in the Contract Department of a property developer, I assisted with a mixed-use development in Seri Kembangan, where I gained first-hand exposure to contract administration. After completing my internship, I continued with the company and supported the Sales Administration team, where I learned about the sales administration cycle, documentation processes, purchaser records and coordination with solicitors and purchasers. These experiences helped me understand how contract administration and sales administration work hand in hand to ensure the successful delivery of a development from project completion to handover," she said.In addition to Jing Ru’s achievement, TAR UMT’s Professor PMgr Sr Ts Dr Ting Kien Hwa from the Department of Real Estate, FOBE, received the RISM Excellence Award 2026: Outstanding Writer in Property and Construction Award Category A – RISM Member for his article, ‘Building Adaptation – The Way Forward.’

It’s not the kind of thing that happens overnight. Without you realising, it infiltrates you; suddenly, your energy starts depleting, and the colours around you seem dull. Days go by, and you feel like you're chasing time; getting out of your bed feels heavy as if an invisible weight is pushing you down. You feel lonely, yet you don't want anyone around you. The next thing you know, you realise you're far from feeling okay. Your mental health is evidently, utterly, completely unwell.Did you know that mental health problems among Malaysian students are more common than you think?“I was hopeful when I was going through my diploma, and I passed with flying colours; However, things started to feel difficult for me, and I ended up flopping during my degree as I couldn't get out of bed. Even taking a shower feels like a chore,” explains Aizat Roslan, a 23-year-old Accounting student. Diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD, Aizat says he has dealt with this feeling since high school, but it worsened when an unexpected event hits his life. Dania Husna, a student majoring in Psychology, says having mental health problems profoundly affects her studies and overall quality of life. “I was slacking in my studies and submitting my assignments past their due dates, as even the simplest tasks like eating felt so heavy on me to deal with. On top of that, I constantly felt tired, and talking to people could easily drain me out.”Band-aids to Invisible WoundsIt feels like forever, and no matter what you do, it doesn't feel like there is a solution to pull yourself out of that quicksand. Blind optimism can add salt to the wound, but there are certainly ways you can try to ease your mental health problem little by little and cope through your student life. 1. Do What You Love“When it gets too heavy, I will watch youtube and play computer games after doing my assignments,” says Aizat. Ensuring you take time off your studies by filling it with activities you enjoy can help you regulate your emotions.2. Seek Social SupportSpending quality time with others enables you to gain support and strength within interpersonal connections. Sujiyitha, a Psychology alumni from HELP University, shares that she “enjoys spending time with loved ones by going out for movies with them or simply having a nice meal together” heps her feel a lot better during times she is feeling burnt out.”3. Get Enough Sleep Pulling an all-nighter can increase your depressive mood, so you must get enough sleep for your brain to function well the next day. 4. Enhance Study Experience Although going out of your room is the last thing you want to do, being in a new study environment can boost your productivity and enhance your overall mood. Dania mentions that apart from finding a great study environment, she would invite her friends to study together to reinforce her understanding of specific topics.5. Create a Structured Schedule“When I am aware that my plate is heavy with too many unfinished tasks, I begin to list them according to their due dates and then work accordingly so I won't feel overwhelmed,” Sujiyitha shares.6. TherapyWhen all fails, and your poor mental health condition is getting more chronic, going for therapy can be the best solution. Your therapist can help you identify coping methods that suit you and insights on triggers to help you better understand yourself. A Lack Of AccessAlthough going for therapy is the best coping strategy for mental health problems among students, a lack of access to it makes it difficult for students to consider it an option. “I love the therapy sessions that I gained through a local clinic, but the downside is that it's too expensive, which has caused me to decrease the frequency of my visits," Aizat shares. Dania mentions, “Students nowadays are more vocal and self-aware about their mental health issues, but these services could be out of people's budget, and the more affordable centres have an influx of clients coming in which could be hard to accommodate, such as in public hospitals.” Sujiyitha expresses her fair share of frustration about the availability of Malaysia's mental health services. “In my experience, appointments through government health centres are not so frequent when psychotherapy has to be done weekly. In private centres, it's undeniably pricey. Many friends of mine are in desperate need of help, but they cannot afford it, or the access is rather inconvenient, from admission all the way to the waiting period. When one is feeling mentally demotivated, how are they willing to attend an arduous service to get access? They easily lose motivation to seek help in the first place, unless one is privileged enough to gain quick access through costly private therapy centres. But the question is, how many of us here are that privileged?” Some private therapy centres offer cheaper-than-average options, like RELATE Malaysia, Thrive Well, Cara-Cara Mental Fitness and HumanKind Community Counselling, which ranges between RM45-RM80 per session. But, of course, if those options are still way out of your budget as a student, you can opt for the counselling services from your university that’s available, as they're usually free. “I had active therapy sessions that were offered by HELP's CPCS (Centre for Psychological and Counselling Services),” Sujiyitha shares. “Hence, through therapy, I have picked up effective coping mechanisms which I currently take practice off like mindful breathing and a lot of gratitude journaling.”Dealing with mental health issues through student life can be extremely debilitating; but with the right coping strategy and support system, you can find ways to manage the weight and make small progress, one day at a time.(Be gentle on yourself, dear student.)

It Feels Like Forever - Students Speak Up About Their Mental Health Issues

Hello, students sitting for SPM. The mathematics papers are right around the corner, and it’s best to be as fully prepared as possible. So there’s no harm in learning a few helpful tips to help you prepare for your exams.Everyone needs to be as fully prepared as possible for their exam papers, and the mathematics paper is no exception. It's always good to research some studying tips to help you score in your exams. So read on for some handy tricks for you to remember and use effectively during your exams!1. Memorise your formulas! You should always memorise your formulas, even if they are in the examination papers. Despite formula sheets appearing in your exam papers, they will only have most of the basic formulas. Not every formula will be present in your papers. You would not need to refer to the formula sheet provided by memorising your formulas. Also, instead of relying on the formula sheet, you wouldn't need to use it as you remember the formulas you would need to use to answer the tough questions in your exam! This should come in handy when you need to use the right formula but the formula sheet does not have it.2. Time management! Time is minimal during your exam, which is why you need to manage your time wisely while answering your questions. To do this, you might want to consider using this tip. First, try skipping the questions you find pretty difficult to answer. This will help you save time instead of taking too much time to answer one question. Then, once you are done answering all the other questions, you can go back to answer that tricky question. This method is a tried and true method that has helped a lot of people in their exams, and it will certainly help you too.3. If you have questions that you are absolutely uncertain in answering, leave them! Some questions might be too difficult for you to answer during your exam. If you do not know how to answer the question, it’s best to leave them and focus on doing the questions you do know how to answer. It's okay to leave one or two questions unanswered if you really do not know the answer. You can make up for it by making sure you answer the questions that you know how to answer well to get full marks for them!4. Read your questions carefully and ensure that you input the right values into your calculations! Make sure you read and understand the questions carefully to answer the questions correctly. Be sure to use the correct values to avoid making callous mistakes when calculating. For example, you wouldn’t want to calculate area when you wanted to calculate perimeter! Mistakes like these will cost you precious marks and might be the difference in getting the A grade or the B grade.5. Practice, practice, practice! Keep doing past-year and revision papers to stay sharp and ready! The more you practise doing past-year questions, the more prepared you will be when facing real questions during your exam. The more you practice, the more you will be familiarised to the types of questions that you will encounter during your exam. Try doing as many SPM past-year questions as you can so that you will know how to answer those questions in the real exam. Therefore, ensure you practice a lot, so your mind will be sharp, and you will take on the exam questions with ease.Hopefully, these tips will help you during your exam. Dear students, Mathematics Paper 1&2 are just around the corner!

Check out our tips for SPM Maths paper!

Like all the countless years before, SPM starts with the language papers. Most people would have mixed feelings for these papers, especially English. Some might even say that the English paper is one of the hardest, if not the most challenging, in SPM! However, some people might breeze through the paper as if it’s nothing. This is because there is no concrete method to study English. How are you supposed to improve in a language that you speak every day? Well, here are some valuable tips that you might find convenient to help you with your English papers.
1. Don’t just read—understand what you’re reading.
A big part of the English exam consists of comprehension. You cannot just read the passage in the question paper. You have to understand what you are reading to answer the questions correctly. Read the passage a few times over and over if you have to understand the passage's message. Take care not to take too long to read, or you won’t have enough time to write down your answers!
2. Be a grammar Nazi.
To ace your English paper, you have to be very particular about your grammar. Even a minor spelling error or misuse of a word in your essays will cost you precious marks. So be sure to take proper care of your punctuation, sentence structure and overall flow of sentences when writing so that not only do they make sense, but they are grammatically correct as well.
3. Make the dictionary your best friend.
We don’t actually mean you to take a dictionary and study it. However, instead of just reading the dictionary, it can be super helpful to learn new words and their meanings to make use of them while writing your essay. Learning new words and definitions could also help you during those problematic trick questions!
4. Practise writing.
When it comes to writing, the only way to improve your writing is to practice. Only by doing lots and lots of practice will you gradually improve your writing skills. Try doing some past year essay questions and use your pen and paper to write a bunch of different essays. Compare your written answers with some of the given answers and see where you can improve based on your writing. If writing stories is your strong suit, try writing more factual essays and vice versa.
5. Be confident.
Before entering the examination hall, all you can do is be confident. However, with the number of preparations you have made, you should be confident enough to score excellent marks and ace the exam! For more tips on studying for SPM, check out our other articles below!

5 crazy ways to get you into the study mood for SPM

Must know SPM survival tips

Be a biology champion with our SPM tips!

Become a chemistry wizard with these SPM tips!

Check out our tips for SPM Maths paper!

Students often transfer to different institutions to go after their desired package. If you wish to switch classes/schools, you should do it as soon as possible so that you will not be left behind in your study.
9. I don’t know which stream I want to choose.
