Learn how to become an AI engineer in Malaysia: subjects to take, best degrees, entry requirements, skills, and career pathway explained.
The usual route to become an AI engineer starts with Mathematics at school, followed by pre-university or diploma study and a relevant bachelor's degree. Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science and Software Engineering can all lead into AI engineering.
The most direct options are Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science with an AI focus. Software Engineering and broader Computer Science degrees can also provide relevant foundations. Before university, students can take STPM, matriculation, foundation, A-Levels or a relevant diploma, depending on the degree requirements.
Universities do not always use the exact title "AI Engineering". Relevant programmes include:
University | Relevant programme | Duration |
Bachelor of Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) | 3.5 years UM Study
Bachelor in Artificial Intelligence with Honours | 3 years FAI UTM
Bachelor of Computer Science (Honours) (Artificial Intelligence) | 3 years Multimedia University
Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons) (Artificial Intelligence) | 3 years Asia Pacific University
Bachelor of Computer Science in Artificial Intelligence | 3 years Malaysia
Bachelor of Computer Science (Intelligent Computing) with Honours | 4 years USM Computer
Bachelor in Computer Science (Artificial Intelligence) (Honours) | 3 years Uniten Backend
Bachelor in Artificial Intelligence (Honours) | 3 years UPTM
Bachelor in Computer Science (Honours)
Bachelor in Software Engineering (Honours) | 3 years FOCS TARC |
The first eight have a direct AI or intelligent-computing focus. MSU and TAR UMT offer broader computing routes with AI-related study. Check current entry requirements and accreditation before applying.
Yes. Computer Science and Software Engineering graduates can move into AI by developing programming, machine learning, data and AI development skills. Diploma holders can continue their studies or enter technical roles. A degree is not the only route, but it remains a common pathway into professional AI roles.
Mathematics should be a priority. Depending on the programme, students may also need Additional Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or ICT. Requirements vary, so check the degree before choosing your subjects.

A typical route is:
SPM/IGCSE/IB → Pre-university or Diploma → Relevant Bachelor's Degree → Projects + Internship → AI/ML employment

Skill | Tools | Why it matters |
Programming | Python, SQL, Git | Writing applications, working with data and managing code. |
Data | NumPy, pandas | Preparing and transforming datasets. |
Machine learning | scikit-learn, PyTorch, TensorFlow | Building and training ML models. |
Deployment | AWS, Azure, Google Cloud | Running AI applications. |
Generative AI | Model APIs, RAG | Building applications around language models. |
Yes. TalentCorp identifies AI Engineers among 60 emerging roles expected to grow in importance over the next three to five years.
Malaysia is expanding AI adoption across healthcare, manufacturing, financial services and public services. MDEC reported RM3.29 billion in approved AI investment in Q2 2025, associated with an estimated 6,920 jobs.
Businesses and government agencies are adopting AI systems, increasing the need for people who can develop, integrate and maintain them. Malaysia's National AI Action Plan also targets 300,000 to 500,000 new AI-related jobs across the wider AI workforce.
Salary varies by experience and role. Our AI/ML Engineer career guide provides current salary ranges from junior to senior positions.
Not always, but several AI and computing programmes require it. Check the specific university requirements. For more on subject requirements, see our guide to Additional Mathematics requirements.
Not universally. Mathematics is the key subject to check, while other requirements vary by programme.
Yes. An AI, Software Engineering or another relevant technical degree can provide a route into the field.
Yes. Relevant diploma holders can progress to a bachelor's degree or pursue technical roles that match their skills.
Current evidence suggests AI is more likely to change the work than eliminate the profession. The International Labour Organization reports that one in four workers globally is in an occupation with some exposure to generative AI, while most jobs are more likely to be transformed than made redundant.
