Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) surpassed its previous best, ranking 12th worldwide in the QS Top 50 Under 50 for the year 2019.
The popular rankings, which ranks universities 50 years old or younger, saw three other members of the Fab Five public universities do Malaysia proud. Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) came close to UKM, finishing in the 13th spot. Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) in turn was hot on the heels of UPM, ending up just one spot behind in the 14th place. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) rounded off the Malaysian representatives in the 18th position.
The missing member of the Fab Five was Universiti of Malaya (UM), which – fresh in its success of breaking into the top 100 in the QS World University Rankings – is 113 years old and therefore not ranked. The Malaysian private university contingent was also heavily represented, albeit ranking in the top 150 instead of the top 50.
UCSI University retained its position as the top-ranking private university in 2019 by ranking in the 61-70 bracket, ahead of Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) that ranked in the 71-80 bracket. Taylor’s University (91-100) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (101-150) also made it to the top 150.
The parameters used for the QS Top 50 Under 50 are the same as that of the QS World University Rankings 2019. However, as the title suggests, universities 50 years or younger are ranked. The indicators are:
