I had the opportunity to meet many people with different ideas. The lecturers are really cool and you get to know and be assured of what you’re in for,” said Ariff, citing his time with the college. Ariff also fondly remembers a lecturer, the late Miss Suhana (Communication lecturer and singer), whom he thanks for his success in his music career. “She believed in connecting with the students and always brought out the best in them. “She encouraged me to let loose and explore my creativity in music and be confident about my art. We had to present a skit and I asked myself, ‘Can I really do this?’,” Yap said. “It forced me out of my shell. I felt out of place even among my coursemates and I started asking ‘what on earth am I doing?’ “It is by asking those questions and finding an answer that I came to where I am today. Social media platforms are also slowly taking over the traditional advertising medium, making advertising content a lot more diverse than ever!For over 40 years, IACT College has been about preparing students for the advertising and creative communication industry through their well-known diploma and degree programs. How does a Creative Communication Specialist college like IACT College make sure the training provided to her students stay relevant in this ever evolving industry? What makes both, teaching and learning creative communication at IACT College different from the rest?“What’s unique is the way we deliver our material. We use Project-Based Learning (PBL) as a method for our students. Students are assigned real-life projects, many of which come from our industry partners. Students are trained to not only better at their area of studies, but also in dealings with their future employers and customers! “All in all, these real-life projects more than prepare our students for the real world of communications.” Lawrence Chan adds.Besides Project-Based Learning, IACT College also prides itself by training sharp and creative minds. With its’ tagline “Creativity Begins Here”, the college values creativity and encourage students to think out of the box, and push themselves further in generating ideas for marketing, advertising and communications. ”Creativity is a set of skills and knowledge to solve problems; When a problem occurs, it motivates an innovation. That whole process to me is creativity”, advertising student Ethan Cheang shared. “In IACT College we learn to let our creativity flow by going through what we call ‘the incubation process’. I found this process useful and crucial because what I want to do here is to relax my brain in order to trigger my subconscious mind. Besides having guest lectures from the industry, practitioners are also invited to assess the subjects offered every now and then to maintain industry relevance. “This practice is another thing sets us apart. We cannot afford to teach our students one thing when what is going on out there in the real world is something very different! Guided by their lecturers and industry mentors, our students gain valuable in-depth knowledge and practical experience of their subject, while learning the value of teamwork and collective problem solving.” Lawrence Chan says.Another advertising student, Hilmi Mustaffa, who won Champion in United Nations Creative Expressions Competition with his idea “First Aid Biker” said, “A fool-proof method to learn in IACT College is to have consultations with the lecturer and ask for their guidance, after all they are from the industry and are happy to guide, and they are here to ensure that our creative work is up to professional standards. Besides that, I also subscribe to various sites and forums like adweek, adage, and adporn from reddit to name a few, in order to keep myself in touch with what is new in the industry. Creativity in The Ever Changing Advertising World

‘The story is the most important thing of any production,’ says Chin Hor, who has shot documentaries for National Geographic and History Channel. ‘The DOP is an extension of the director, so you need to know the story that you are shooting for.’ The 6 hours industry workshop that was held on Thursday, 9th of March was organized as part of the BA (Hons) Media, Culture and Communication Year 3 broadcasting module. It was opened to all Broadcasting students in IACT College to join. 16 pairs of earnest eyes looked on as Chin Hor stood beside his Canon C300, trying to capture wisdom from his 11 years of experience in the documentary industry.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b0e02.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-73505 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b0e02.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="322"></a>Chin Hor stressed that a good DOP must have good grasp of camera fundamentals such as exposure, focus, framing, colour and contrast. The use of tripod and caring for sound are equally important. He shared that in his experience, there were industry professionals who neglected such fundamentals, resulting in subpar or unusable video footage.Even though lighting in documentaries is not as complex as other forms of video productions, it is still key in getting good shots. ‘Where does the sun rise and sets? The sun is the main light source in any outdoor shoot. The position of the sun determines colour temperature and also how the shadow will be cast. If it’s indoor, look for windows and test out all available lights.’ Chin Hor showed how the matte box on his camera can be used to cut flare; explained the use of polarizers and filters for camera lens; and demonstrated the proper way of holding reflectors.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b455a.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-73506 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b455a.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>‘Remember, the job that you are doing is an audition for the next one!’ Chin Hor exclaimed. He insisted that good habits are part and parcel of good work ethics. Some habits he practiced: regular maintenance and cleaning of equipment, take pride in all your work (regardless of payment amount), learn to work independently but be a team-player, pay attention to your surrounding so you can think two steps ahead, be culturally sensitive and be professional.According to Chin Hor, styles and techniques of shooting depends on a few factors. One factor is the production company or TV station that the documentary is made for, as the technical specifications differs from local stations to Al Jazeera. Genre is another factor, a travelogue could have more dynamic camera movements compared to serious issue-based documentaries. ‘You should know why you are shooting each shot and make sure that every shot is good enough for the edit,’ he continued, adding that a variety of shots is necessary, to give options for editors and directors. Through experience, a DOP will learn to gauge when they have taken enough shots.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b775b.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-73507 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85b775b.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>After more than two hours of sharing, Chin Hor then proceeded to set up for an interview shoot, complete with 3-point lighting. He explained the use of each equipment as he sets them up. The lecturer sat in as the interviewee, while the class took out their camera to see how the shot looks like through their lens. Chin Hor showed how different lighting setups could have different effect on the subject matter, and also that no two cameras captures light and pictures in the same way. ‘The camera operator should be well-versed with their camera, but sometimes client may ask you to use a different camera for a job, then you should do research and practice with that camera beforehand,’ Chin Hor shared.<a href="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85bacf8.jpg"><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-73508 fr-fic fr-dii" src="https://img.afterschool.my/storage/uploads/images/getadvice/73503/59894b85bacf8.jpg" alt="" width="800" height="400"></a>The class then divided into groups of 3 to practice setting up their own interview shoot. Chin Hor went around to give more personalized feedback to each group. After staying on for another hour post-workshop to quiz Chin Hor, the students finally left, looking inspired and ready to give cinematography their best shot.

Give It Your Best Shot

Victoriya Titova, born in Uzbekistan and raised in Malaysia, enrolled in IACT College as a Graphic Design student in 2014. “I wanted a Graphic Design course that was different from the rest – one that not only sharpened my art and design skills, but also enhanced my conceptualisation skills. Some friends recommended IACT College, so here I am,” she said. Having been founded by the industry itself, IACT College understands the need for the right kind of talent. IACT College lecturers have an average of 12 years of industry experience. Lim said, “Lecturers who are also industry practitioners give us the confidence we need when it comes to coping with our employers. The competition is organized by IACT College, the Creative Communication specialist, in partnership with Study Hub Asia and sponsors Milo and Domino&#39;s Pizza. The competition reached, inspired and empowered about 2,200 students over 230 schools to participate.The organizing chairman, Mr. Shyamachandran from IACT College says, "We&#39;ve always believed that every school has their distinctive  culture, and students being so creative in many ways, combining the two together, we see the birth of interesting short films that document collective memory of their school. This is the first time we run such a big scale competition an we are glad that it is for such a meaningful cause!"As part of the efforts in grooming young filmmakers, IACT College also held a Video Production Clinic on 16 and 23 July for over "MySekolah" 400 contestants from over 70 schools on and trained them on ideation, creative execution and basic film-making techniques. The clinic was run by industry expert lecturers from mass communication and broadcasting industry.After the production clinic, contestants were given 1 month to put their ideas to work. The finished short films were then uploaded onto mysekolah.org<a href="http://mysekolah.my"> </a> for voting. The website garnered around 580,000 page views and ranked one of the top viewed pages in Malaysia.
