The annual National Science Challenge (NSC) is back with a series of exciting challenges that will test students on their knowledge and application of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Now in its 19th year and managed by Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), the NSC 2018 is open for registration to all 16 year-old science stream students nationwide.
Champions (Kolej Yayasan Saad team) of the 2017 National Science Challenge held last year on 18 August 2018.
The ExxonMobil Subsidiaries in Malaysia has been supporting the NSC since 2012 as part of its long term investment in the development of Malaysia’s human capital, especially in the area of STEM education. The preliminary round kicks off on 21 May 2018. Schools are allowed to register as many teams as they like. Each team must consist of three students and a mentor teacher. The preliminary round will be in the form of an online quiz, where the best five teams including a wild card team comprising top three individual scorers in each state will progress to compete at the state level competition.
The winning team from Kolej Yayasan Saad and their mentor teachers had the once-in-a-lifetime experience to witness the Nobel Prizes Awards Ceremony and attend the Nobel Lecturers in Stockholm, Sweden.
The best team from each state will move forward to the Semi Finals which is conducted as an eight-day residential science camp hosted by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia at its Skudai campus in Johor. The top four teams at the end of the camp will advance to the Grand Final in Kuala Lumpur, where they will be tested in the form of an interactive science quiz comprising the Individual Category, the Video Category, the Open Category and the Project Presentation Category.
The champions will take home the Prime Minister’s Challenge Trophy and participate in an exclusive one-week study trip to Stockholm, Sweden for a once-in-a-lifetime pportunity to attend and observe the prestigious international Nobel Prize Awards ceremony and Nobel Lectures. Second, third and fourth-placed teams as well as the top individual scorer during the preliminary round of the Challenge will receive an invitation to the exclusive Sakura Science High School Programme (SSHP) in Tokyo, Japan. The SSHP invites young scientists in Asia to expand their knowledge of science and technology while encouraging the active exchange of ideas and opinions in a multi-lateral environment. Find out more about the National Science Challenge and sign up at nsc.my/participant before 20 May 2018.
