The Higher Education Ministry will discontinue new scholarships for local students who wish to study in Egypt, due to the instability in the country, according to Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh.

He went on to mention that, while it is indeed the right and choice of the students if they still wish to study in Egypt, they should also know the importance of being up-to-date with the latest developments there, emphasising the uncertainty that has plagued the country in recent times.

Datuk Seri Idris also said that it was understood that at this time, the Malaysian students in Egypt who were sponsored by the government were those completing their studies. As such, Idris handed down contributions amounting to USD94,000 from the fund initiated by the Federation of Peninsular Malaysia (GPMS) to 16 Malaysian students still studying in Egypt.
