Last year the Prime Minister Najib Razak announced that the allocation for higher education in Budget 2016 will be decreased.
Recently the nation was surprised when Dato' Sri Najib Razak stated the suspension of the new intakes for JPA scholarships in a cabinet meeting. His announcement was applied to both overseas and local scholarships which affects almost 700 placements this year.
The statement was declared in a cabinet meeting, but no official press release was made.
This allegation was confirmed by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Wee Ka Siong yesterday.
Students responded to this drastic move and some had questioned why the JPA scholarships were suspended, but not Mara scholarships.
However, Wee declined to reply to these statements, claiming that he had not heard of it.
Wee stated that he did not know whether the suspension of the JPA scholarships had anything related to the planned budget revision on this upcoming 28th January.
The allegation of JPA scholarships being suspended was even strengthened when the "bursary e-filing system" link on JPA's website (which is used by students to apply for the scholarships) had been removed.
The cabinet already made an order to Chief Secretary to The Government of Malaysia and Public Service Department to re-examine a new solution about this issue.
