Cash rewards for students who are active in sports as well as athletes who won medals in the Malaysia Games (Sukma) can be replaced with educational scholarships if it is found beneficial for them.
Minister of Youth and Sports, Khairy Jamaluddin stated that the ministry does not prevent any state governments from changing the form of rewards and incentives to be given to each athlete.
"There are many athletes in the Sukma games who are still studying, and if there's any state governments wanting to give rewards in the form of education savings, feel free to do so," said Khairy.
At the same time, he also urged that cash rewards will still be given as not all athletes are still studying.
