The Yang di-Pertuan Agong (BYDPA) scholarship is to recognize the extraordinary abilities of a student, as well as to enable students to pursue postgraduate studies in Science and Technology, Economics, Law and Islamic Finance. The advantage of this scholarship is in terms of scholarships offered, eligibility and placement in leading universities.

The number of scholarships provided is twelve scholarships, six for Master's degree and six scholarships for PhDs each year.


Applicant must meet all the below requirements

  • Malaysian citizen
  • Age must not exceed 35 years in the year of commencement of the study
  • Has excellent academic results i.e. CGPA 3.75 OR First-Class OR the equivalent
  • Candidates who are active in co-curricular activities or community activities or produce creative and innovative works will be given special privileges
  • Proficient candidates in more than one international language will be given special privileges; and
  • Has been awarded a full-time offer of Science or Technology, Economics, Law or Islamic Finance at a local research university such as Appendix B1 or at world-renowned universities based on Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Ranking , Academic Ranking World Universities (ARWU), Barron's Profiles Of American Colleges or any other prestigious universities approved by PSD as in Appendix B2.

Recipients of BYDPA who have completed their studies are required to return to Malaysia to serve in the country for a period of not less than five (5) years. To ensure that the conditions are met, selected candidates are required to sign an agreement with the Government. If the selected candidate is composed of students sponsored by PSD at Bachelor level, they are still bound to serve the Government in accordance with a predetermined period under the sponsorship of the undergraduate program. Compensation rate as in force at the present time will be charged if the student violates the terms of the agreement.
