University of Southampton Malaysia Campus has been awarded full approval by Malaysia Qualifications Agency (MQA) for its MEng in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) programme.

The programme is set to commence in September 2013 at the University’s Malaysia Campus at the EduCity, Iskandar in South Johor. The MQA approval follows the completion of a successful assessment exercise to ascertain that the teaching, learning and other related activities of the EEE programme have met the quality standards and are in compliance with the Malaysian government’s higher education guidelines.

Southampton’s degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering features a variety of innovative teaching methods and assessment including coursework, group work and exams. Future graduates are required to complete a four-year study with their first two years of study hosted at the Malaysia Campus and the final two years at the UK campus in Southampton. Students at the Malaysia Campus benefit the same teaching modules as those on the first two years in Southampton at an overall cost of 40 per cent less.

In their final two years, students will be exposed to some of Southampton’s outstanding electrical engineering teaching laboratories and computing facilities including the renowned world-leading high-voltage laboratory.

This programme also provides students’ with some flexibility to specialise in what interests them most about either electrical or electronic engineering, or to develop a broader understanding of EEE and go on to solve the great challenges of tomorrow such as the 'smart grid'.

The degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering joins Southampton’s undergraduate MEng in Mechanical Engineering as the two leading programmes offered by the University through its Malaysia Campus.

Further to their approval, the University of Southampton has also been ranked as number one in the UK for the fourth year in a row in 2013 for Electrical and Electronic Engineering according to the Guardian University Guide. The University is also ranked second overall by The Guardian for Mechanical Engineering and placed in the top five for Computer Science and IT in the same guide.

The Guardian tables are based on data from the National Student Survey and the Higher Education Statistics Agency, covering teaching quality and feedback, spending per student, staff/student ratios, job prospects, a “value added” criteria (comparing students degree results with entry qualifications), and entry scores.

The Guardian has traditionally put a strong emphasis on student-centred issues in the construction of their league table, which continues to be an important factor in student choice, particularly in the international market.

“This is great news and a confidence booster for our students and our staff. Prospective students who are currently holding offers to come to Southampton to study our degree programmes later this year, will know what they are gaining by joining our institution as the Guardian is a reputable third source recognition” said Professor Neil White, Head of Electronics and Computer Science at the University. “Internationally, our students from outside the UK have confirmation that they will be studying in one of the best places in the world.

“Our students can be sure that they will benefit from the highest-quality teaching and facilities, and that when they graduate they will be in demand by the leading companies in the world,” he added.

During June and July, the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will host a series of Information Sessions in Petaling Jaya, Penang, Miri and Kota Kinabalu to share details of its world-leading programmes and the advantages of applying to study at the campus in South Johor. Staff from the University will speak first hand on the courses, laboratory and other facilities at the Campus, as well as current student projects, career opportunities and Southampton’s excellent industry links track record. Detailed information will also be available on accommodation, fees, the application and interview process as well as scholarships.

Professor John McBride, the Chief Executive Officer of University of Southampton, Malaysia Campus, added, “The University of Southampton is recognised amongst the top one percent of the world’s universities and our engineering portfolio is consistently rated very highly in university league tables. We are very proud of that reputation and believe that students who choose to study with us at the University of Southampton Malaysia Campus will receive a first class education from a world-leading institution.”
