The government will examine health and social perspectives before determining the ban on electronic cigarettes or vape in universities.
Malaysian Minister of Higher Education Dato' Seri Idris Jusoh last week said that a six-month research through the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) would be carried out to obtain a balanced perspective on vaping. Vaping has been seen to have potential health risks as it continues to be popular amongst university students.
Along with studies from the Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM), the results would then be presented to the Cabinet.
The minister also reminded that the institutions had the authority to choose to ban vaping, similar to smoking prohibitions enforced in some universities.
