Universiti Utara Malaysia receives 4,000 new students this September intake

About 4,000 students has so far registered with Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM), Sintok near here today for the first session of the 2013/2014 term.

UUM deputy vice-chancellor (student affairs and alumni) Assoc Prof Dr Abdul Malek Abdul Karim said there was an increase in terms of quality of applicants with 90 per cent of them scoring a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 3.00 compared to 78 per cent before.

He attributed this to efforts made by the university, including improving the quality of academic programmes offered.

UUM has been accepted as a member of the Asean University Network comprising 30 members and is actively promoting its programmes within and outside the country, he said in a statement today.

About 3,000 students will be taking first degrees in 39 disciplines while 1,000 more postgraduate studies, he said, adding that about 700 of the students were from 38 countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, China, Libya, Somalia and Tanzania.

Two new programmess offered for this academic session are Bachelor of Creative Industry Management (Honours) and Bachelor of Philosophy in Law and Business (Honours), he added.
