UUM ATTAINS AUTONOMY

Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) was granted autonomy after undergoing an audit process utilising the Code of University Good Governance (CUGG) and the University Good Governance Index (UGGI). The ceremony took place at the Plenary Hall of the Putrajaya International Convention Centre on the morning of 29 January 2013.

The official letter granting autonomy was presented by the Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin to Datuk Nik Mohd Amin Nik Abdul Majid, Member of the UUM Board of Directors, who accepted it on behalf of the Chairman of the UUM Board of Directors as well as the Vice-Chancellor of UUM, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Mohamed Mustafa Ishak (see photo above).

According to the Minister of Higher Education, he hopes that with this autonomy, the University Board of Directors would be prepared to carry out their new responsibility, in keeping with the authority devolved upon them, and lead the institution of higher learning towards greater heights of excellence.

Apart from UUM, the one other public university that was granted the autonomy award at the event was the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM).

Meanwhile, UUM Vice-Chancellor said that this success and recognition constituted the triumph of the whole UUM community. He added that the entailing heavy responsibility had to be shouldered together by all since the devolvement of authority meant that UUM was the arbiter of its own destiny.

“I need the support of all parties at UUM in optimising this boon. With autonomy, we have the authority to add new posts, implement job promotions, initiate academic restructuring, etc., all of which will be centred upon propelling UUM to the pinnacle of excellence,” he added.

Last year, five research universities were granted autonomy in four fields of study, namely Institutional Governance, Finance and Wealth Creation, Human Resource Management, and Academic Management & Student Admissions.
