For many students here in Malaysia Universiti Teknologi Petronas represents the pinnacle of private tertiary institutions. A full 20 years after its inception, UTP, now steeped in Malaysia education history, continues to surpass their own lofty ambitions on an annual basis. The most recent example: a stunning showing in the very recent Times Higher Education (THE) Asia University Rankings 2018, surging past all but one member of the fab five (University of Malaya, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia) with Universiti Teknologi Petronas ranking 114. Coincidentally, the Universiti Teknologi Petronas intake is now open for foundation students. Uncertain if you should apply? Worried you don’t stand a chance? Fret not and read on to find out why you have to apply for the Universiti Teknologi Petronas intake as soon as possible!
Universiti Teknologi Petronas Intake 2019
The educational landscape of Malaysia has undergone a radical transformation over the last few years, with private institutions sprouting up all over the country at an exponential rate. The ceaseless and onerous competition that is a direct result of this evolution has seen all these private establishments duking it out in an effort to be the very best option the country has to offer. Universiti Teknologi Petronas however has arguably been head and shoulders above the competition, cruising under the radar while picking up accolades at the same rate Crtistiano Ronaldo gets a new haircut. Universiti Teknologi Petronas rankings and achievements include:
Universiti Teknologi Petronas courses are among some of the very best that a student will find in Malaysia, a claim that UTP can boldly make due to global recognition and accreditation. UTP engineering courses were ranked among the top 200 in the world by QS in 2018, with chemical engineering in particular fairing extremely well, soaring into the top 150 of the same rankings. Digging a little deeper into Universiti Teknologi Petronas courses and the first thing a student would notice is the how comprehensively they are structured. UTP offer students the chance to take up courses in the fields of engineering as well as science and technology, at every study level. This would allow a UTP student to begin with a foundation level programme, go on to get their bachelor’s degree, proceed to complete their master’s, and finish with a PhD in the field of their choosing, all in one university. Universiti Teknologi Petronas courses include:
Foundation
Bachelor’s Degree
Master’s
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
While the Universiti Teknologi Petronas fees are reasonable and similar to that of other top private institutions in Malaysia, it can on occasion prove to be a stumbling block for many students. To negate this issue, UTP have prepared a catalogue of scholarships that students may apply for. Some of the Universiti Teknologi Petronas scholarships include:
A university can only excel if it is led by brilliant minds, and Universiti Teknologi Petronas is well aware of this, having staffed their faculties with experienced and renowned lecturers, stretching all the way up to their governance. Universiti Teknologi Petronas’ chancellor is none other than the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. UTP’s Pro Chancellor on the other hand is Tan Sri Sidek Hassan, the Chairman of Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas). The very utterance of these names is enough to leave a student star struck, and the fact that such esteemed individuals are helming UTP bodes well for not only the current state of the institution, but its future as well. Additionally, this organisation trickles down to a student level as well, with the additions of both the Student Support Services Department (SSSD) and the Student Representative Council (SRCUTP), which work symbiotically to ensure the well-being of Universiti Teknologi Petronas students. The creation of clubs and societies also ensures a well-rounded education, which is divided into 5 categories:
Clearly then, gaining admission into Universiti Teknologi Petronas is priceless given the advantages their graduates will be able to call upon and the arsenal they will be equipped with. The only thing then left to do, is for a student to apply. And while the competition is fierce, the biggest mistake a student could make is not applying at all. Many individuals feel they aren’t good enough, and therefore never even fill in an application, ultimately sealing their fate. If this sounds like you, do remember that you stand to lose nothing by applying, as Wayne Gretzky so eloquently put: “You will miss 100% of the shots you don’t take”.
