Seven Malaysian universities achieved good ratings and resulted in them being placed on Times Higher Education’s (THE) inaugural Asia-Pacific University Rankings.
While University Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) both had to share the top spot, ranked in the 121-130 bracket, hot on their tails was Universiti Teknologi Petronas(UTP), the no.1 and only private Malaysian university that made the list, beating out the likes of Universiti Sains Malaysia (141-150), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (151-160), Universiti Teknologi MARA (201+), Universiti Utara Malaysia (201+).
The summit of the list was occupied by the usual suspects, with the National University of Singapore (NUS) finishing first, followed by Peking University, the University of Melbourne, Tsinghua University, and Nanyang Technological University rounding out the prestigious top five.
According to editor of THE, Phil Baty, more good news is on the horizon, as Indonesia and Malaysia are two emerging players that have shown great potential, and tweaks to quantity and quality of research that mirror that of their neighbours will surely see their institutions surge up the rankings.
The Asia-pacific University Rankings uses the same 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to as the THE World University Rankings, with only the weightages being recalibrated to reflect priorities of Asian institutions.
