Universiti Malaya plans major upgrade - A new shopping complex, a new Private University & Expansion of UM Specialist Center in the pipeline

  • Universiti Malaya revealed its plans to boost its standing in the QS World University Ranking. Last year, UM was ranked 167th. It hopes to be included in the world’s top 100 universities by 2015 and top 50 universities by 2020.
  • The plan includes a shopping mall on its campus, new private university and expansion of UM specialist centre (UMSC). It will also create 30,000 jobs in the next five years.

  • We reported earlier Universiti Malaya will partner with University of Wales, UK to open its Private University which will operate from its Kampus Kota in Jalan Tun Ismail (see picture below)
  • According to Vice-chancellor Professor Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon, the mega projects will attract more quality students from around the world. Its private university, now at the final stage of completion, would open its door to local and foreign students by early next year.
  • UMSC, meanwhile, will undergo expansion and will be equipped with more medical facilities and state-of-the-art equipment. A commercial hub for medical companies to operate will also be created. All these improvements, which will be ready within 3 years, will provide opportunities for students and lecturers to practise medicine.
  • The projects are all in line with the autonomy privileges accorded to UM, which required it to raise 30% of its own operating expenditure by 2015.
  • A designated train station in the campus via the Sungai Buloh-Kelana Jaya MRT line is also expected to happen in the next few years.
  • For the academic staff, UM will apply a stricter criteria for promotion based on supervision, teaching and publication records. Moreover, the world’s renowned academicians would be invited to its Academic Icon Programme to motivate students and staff. Experts in various fields will also be hired to become lecturers.
