According to the Ministry of Education, Amin's appointment was based on his vast experience in managing the university's academic development.
Amin has been UM's vice-chancellor (academic and international), was an expert in Otorhinolaryngology (head and neck surgery), and a known pioneer cochlear surgeon in the country. He obtained his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from UM in 1982.
Amin, who was awarded the Royal College of Surgeons fellowship in 1989, was a research fellow at the Harvard Medical School in 1994. In 1996, he was appointed fellow of the Academy of Medicine, Malaysia.
The Ministry expressed its gratitude to Tan Sri Dr Ghauth Jasmon, who was appointed vice-chancellor in 2008, took the university to greater heights at both national and international levels.
