  • UKM was also the only Malaysian institution which made it to the top 100 list of the inaugural Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 last June 2012

Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) made it in the top 100 of the inaugural Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings. It is ranked 87th tying up with the American University of Beirut in Lebanon. The ranking exercise benchmarks the public university with other research intensive institutions in the region. Six hundred sixty-five universities took part in this exercise.

UKM vice-chancellor Prof Tan Sri Dr Sharifah Hapsah Syed Hasssan Shahabudin was quoted by the Star that rankings does not measure a university's true worth. "But it does provide some information that is useful towards planning strategies for research excellence," she added.

Last year, UKM ranked 98th in the Top 100 Universities under 50 category. Times Higher Education rankings used 13 separate performance indicators to examine each university's strength against all its core missions namely teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
