The Ministry of Higher Education’s plan to implement the Gap Year programme has already begun as two public universities will kick off the programme this September.

The Gap Year Programme basically an option that allows students to take a year off from studying to gain work experience and ensure that they are qualified as they get into the employment market.

The universities are Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) and Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM).

However, the programme will be open to students who are already in university (Year 2 and/or Year 3 students). Additionally, as of the latest updates, students can only apply for 4 government agencies:

  • The Royal Malaysian Police
  • The Armed Forces
  • National Service Programm
  • Civil Defence Departmen

Each agency has a limited quota for the number of students that will be accepted.

Six more universities are expected to announce their involvement in this programme as the ministry aims to allow eight universities to take part.

It is unclear yet if the ministry will allow students to apply for an organization of their choice besides the government agencies highlighted above. More details will emerge over the coming months.
