ETH Zurich - Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, in Switzerland claims the 10th spot. Founded in 1854, this institution takes pride in its more-than-a-decade of quality education providing the perfect balance between academic education, sports and soft skills. The institution does not only offer 120 different sports, from Aikido to windsurfing, it also serves a huge range of delicacies and catering services from 23 restaurants, cafeterias and a lunch market. The ETH library is the largest public technical and scientific library in Switzerland and is one of the leading libraries in Europe.

Ever wanted to voice out your fascinating ideas or questions but you think no one cares? Well, the University of Chicago is an urban research university that empowers individuals to challenge conventional thinking since 1890. With the right balance between academics, sports, spiritual and community services, this prestigious institution boasts in its athletics centre, which is a 150,000 square-foot sports arena with facilities featuring a 50-meter x 25-yard swimming pool, a fitness centre, a multipurpose dance studio, competition and auxiliary gymnasia and the athletics hall of fame. This $51 million facility received various awards for its excellence in engineering and design. It has also made some ground-breaking contributions by introducing hormonal cancer treatment, proposed the existence of black holes, discovered new dinosaur species, changed the face of economics and countless other discoveries.

With state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities, live online lectures, festivals, fringe exhibitions, live music and art performances, it is no wonder that Imperial College London is named the 8th best university in the world. This apex college started in 1907 and has more than 5 labs! And most of them we haven’t even heard of. There is even a lab that is specially designed for handling meteorites, terrestrial rocks and sediments, seawater, atmospheric and marine particulates and biological materials with more than 10 software including the Virtual Geoscience Simulation Tool and supercomputers. As if the college doesn’t have enough cool gadgets, it is also located in the heart of iconic London. Nuff said.

Speaking of London, University College London (UCL) has been constantly keeping up to its high-profile standards staying at number seven since 2016. Being one of the world’s top multidisciplinary universities with an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching excellence, UCL provides a wide variety of courses including languages, medicine, law, engineering, history and astrophysics. UCL takes pride in its 29 Nobel Laureates with more to come while continuing to serve more than 30,000 students from 150 countries. Founded in 1826, UCL was the first university in England to welcome students of any class, religion and the first to welcome women on equal terms with men. Now that’s what we call equality.
The University of Oxford is situated by the infamous Thames River with nearly 60 faculties offering every kind of course, four museums, a garden, a massive library and owns more than 50 colleges or institutions. Being number six on the QS charts, this world-class campus is also ranked number eight in terms of world employability. It is the best in the world for literature, geography, archaeology, anatomy, physiology, arts and humanities. Teaching existed at Oxford since 1096 and since then, it has more than 200 clubs and societies, restaurants, a bar and a café. In addition to that, the Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society.

British physicist Sir Isaac Newton, mathematician Stephen Hawking, actress Emma Thompson, newspaper editor Arianna Huffington. I’m sure you’ve heard of these names somewhere, somehow. Do you know where they studied? Why, the University of Cambridge, of course. Cambridge has a very rich history and is one of the world’s oldest university, dating all the way back in 1209. In addition to being the fifth best university in the world, there are more than a hundred libraries, their very own museum, a botanic garden, science festival and festival of ideas.

Some of the facilities and awards here are just phenomenal. The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) has five NASA facilities in the campus including the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, 19 spacecrafts, 8 major instruments, 35 Nobel prizes and a cannon that has actually fired a handful of times throughout the year. Now this is no joke. It is also ranked the #1 university in the world according to Times Higher Education. The Emmy-nominated television series, The Big Bang Theory, which is set at Caltech, taped an episode on campus that featured a cameo appearance by world-renowned astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and in several well-known TV shows and movies such as The X-Files, The West Wing, Legally Blonde, Entourage and Mission: Impossible.

America’s oldest institution founded in 1636, Harvard University has been dubbed the third best university in the world and stands out in subject areas such as life sciences, medicine, social sciences, management and accounting. Our favourite CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft founder, Bill Gates, the first African American president Barack and his wife, Michelle Obama and other American presidents studied here! Harvard holds the largest academic library in the world, a famous museum with 28 million works of art, 48 Nobel Laureates, a stadium, a hall of history and a boathouse. Above all, they have produced world-renowned Olympians and gained US$ 4.5 billion in income. What’s not to like?

Stanford University, located at the heart of California’s Silicon Valley, definitely deserves the title of being the 2nd best university in the world. This world leading research university has excelled for more than a decade with US$ 22.4 billion in endowment, nearly 700 major buildings and a Stanford Health Care unit. Stanford has several remarkable innovations such as antibody therapies, bioplastics, digital music, disease management, Google, etc. They have also played a part in the creation of companies like eBay, Cisco Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Instagram, Yahoo!, Netflix, Nike and a whole bunch of other super cool companies you wish to step foot in. Stanford’s manicured lawn has been trodden on by some of the world’s brightest researchers, tech entrepreneurs and influencers of our generation, including Elon Musk, Sergei Brin, Peter Thiel, John Kennedy and Larry Page. A 2012 study estimated that companies formed by Stanford entrepreneurs generate world revenues of $2.7 trillion annually.
