  • Upgrade to university college status will not adversely affect course fees
  • New university programmes to roll out
  • RM56 million will be allotted to TARC to expand operations

Last year, the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) announced that its request to upgrade Tunku Abdul Rahman College from college to university college has been approved by government. According to the  Ministry of Education, the upgrade is to take effect this year.

With the upgrade, TARC's 130 programmes will be consolidated and only selected diploma programmes will be continued while new university programmes will be introduced.

Despite the status upgrade, TARC will continue to offer affordable education to students. Its programmes will not compete but complement with Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) courses. They expect more students to enrol this year.

According to MCA President Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, the government will continue the special funding to TARC. Each year, TARC receives about RM30 million to RM60 million from government.

For 2013, government has approved allocation worth RM56 million. The fund will be used for capital expenditure and for operations, specifically adding a new faculty building, students' centre and hall and vocational training building.

In mid-2012, government recognised TARC's more than 70 programmes. This has benefited the institution's more than 100,000 graduates since 1990.
