By 2018, Shanghai Jiao Tong University's branch campus will be established in Sarawak. In the meantime, the branch campus will take in its first batch of students in September 2014 through Chung Hua Middle School, one of its temporary campuses. It expects to attract about 1,800 students during the first year and up to 5,000 (including foreign students) in the proceeding years.
Shanghai Jiao Tong University is among China's leading institutions of higher learning. Its known for its pioneer research and development in man-made satellite, nuclear powered submarines, carrier rockets and even rejoining severed limbs. Their presence in Malaysia may help boost the country's high technology sector such as micro satellite to monitor environmental and natural resources.
