As the number of Malaysian students heading to New Zealand’s universities continues to grow, Education New Zealand (ENZ) today welcomed results of the 2018 QS World University Rankings which revealed all eight of the country’s universities are ranked in the top 450 worldwide. The number of Malaysian students enrolled in New Zealand’s universities grew by nine per cent in 2016. Currently, there are 1,620 Malaysian students in New Zealand, with 76 per cent enrolled in universities. Five of New Zealand’s eight universities improved their rankings, while the University of Auckland was ranked New Zealand’s top education provider, placing 82nd worldwide.
The QS Rankings consider 3,800 institutions worldwide and rank the top 916. New Zealand is the only country in the world to have all of its universities ranked within the top 450. The largest improvement was by University of Waikato, which moved up 32 places to claim the 292nd spot. Massey and Lincoln universities climbed 24 spots to 316th and 319th respectively. The University of Otago (151st) and Victoria University of Wellington (219th) also made significant gains in their rankings. Meanwhile, the University of Canterbury and Auckland University of Technology (AUT) maintained their relative positions coming in at 214th and the 441-450 bracket respectively.
New Zealand’s university system was also recently ranked as the seventh best in the world in the annual Universitas 21 league table, where countries are ranked on factors such as government spending, research, and the independence of universities to run their own affairs. John Laxon, Education New Zealand’s Regional Director of South, South East Asia & the Middle East, said that the universities’ strong rankings were a key factor for prospective Malaysian students. “Having all of our universities featured globally in the top 450 is something that no other country has achieved, and really strengthens New Zealand’s position as a world-class education destination. New Zealand universities have solidified their international standing by providing students with a positive learning experience and global career opportunities,” said Mr Laxon.
He further added that international students make up a substantial portion of the tertiary education landscape in New Zealand. Recent data has revealed that there were over 27,640 international students studying at one of the country’s eight universities in 2016. For Sukhjit Gill, a lawyer with Mercedes-Benz Malaysia, New Zealand’s world-class education and welcoming culture are second to none.“Studying in New Zealand were the best years of my life. I was fortunate enough to attend both the University of Otago and Victoria University of Wellington, and I received an all-rounded experience during my time there.
“Not only is the quality of education brilliant, but the country itself is breathtaking and the people are so warm and friendly - I believe that no other country can offer this. New Zealand is also very safe and secure, and the core values such as honesty and integrity are such a big part of the Kiwi culture,” said Ms Gill.
“It is exciting to see more and more Malaysian students choosing New Zealand as their preferred study destination. These positive trends reflect the strong relationship between Malaysia and New Zealand, with thousands of Malaysian students now forging impressive careers in Malaysia and around the world. We look forward to welcoming more students in the near future,” Mr Laxon added. The QS Rankings consider academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty to student ratio, citations per faculty, international faculty and international students.
