Having high competency in English language is the reason why private sector rather hire graduates from private universities and colleges compared to graduates from public universities.

Former vice-chancellor of University Malaya (UM), Prof Ghauth Jasmon stated that the current number of unemployment among public university graduates is 400,000 and 80% of the jobless would be Bumiputera.

Prof Ghauth also warned that the number of graduates from public universities to be unemployed will be 600,000 in the next years if nothing is done to improve their competency in English.

"Since graduates from private universities and colleges are trained to have good proficiency in English, hence they are more employable than graduates from public universities," he added.

Prof Ghauth's predicament is further supported by a survey done by Jobstreet; 64% of fresh graduates failed to be hired due to their poor command of the English language.
