Earlier this year, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) announced plans of establishing a boutique university for Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

The government received several proposals from private sectors and industries, and Prestariang Education Sdn Bhd (PESB), a public-listed company with a turnover of RM111 million in 2011, was chosen for the project.

Just recently, PESB announced the appointment of Professor Datuk Dr Halimaton Hamdan as the vice-chancellor of its boutique university to be set up in Cyberjaya. According to industry insiders, although unconfirmed, the new boutique university will be taking over the Mahindra Satyam building (see left photo insert), which previously closed down.

Prestariang's core business includes providing ICT training and certification together with the supply of licences and management for the software. Its partners include Microsoft, Oracle, Autodesk, Comptia and IBM.

Prof Datuk Dr Halimaton, a scientist, researcher and educator, is winner of multiple international awards and recognitions including the World Invention Award Glass Oberlisk in the British Invention Show in 2007, the ‘Maerogel’ product of the year by Clean Energy Circle UK 2008 and the esteemed Merdeka Award in the Health, Science and Technology Sector in 2009.

Halimaton holds numerous distinguished professional positions including Professor of Chemistry at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and as an under secretary for the National Nanotechnology Directorate, Ministry of Science Technology and Innovation (Mosti).
On leading the first setup of a boutique university of computing, Halimaton noted that it was the perfect time to spearhead the way of teaching ICT to be more industry-based curriculum merging science and technology.
Looking to the future, Halimaton shares her goals for the new boutique university. “One of my aims is to ensure that the university will provide the enabling environment and comprehensive learning opportunities to as many talented Malaysians as possible encouraging the birth of innovators to meet the market’s demand of highly skilled graduates, integrating computer science into other fields of emerging science and technology,” she said.
A chemistry graduate from Indiana University, USA in 1979, Halimaton completed her Masters of Science at Marshall University, USA in 1981 and subsequently earned her PhD in 1989 from University of Cambridge, UK
