Premier polytechnics on the way to university status by 2015

  • Ministry of Higher Education aims to improve polytechnics' image through introduction of six new degree programmes
  • 15,300 students to benefit from these programmes which are industry-based

The country's premier polytechnics - Politeknik Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah (Shah Alam), Politeknik Ungku Omar (Ipoh) and Politeknik Johor Baru (Johor) - are now offering six new degree programmes which will lead them to become universities within the institution of polytechnics by 2015.

The bachelor's degrees include Business Management, Manufacturing Technology, Design Engineering Technology, Automative Technology Design, Medical Electronic Engineering, Digital Animation and International Tourism Management.

The new courses are also expected to improve the image of polytechnics and help graduates of polytechnic institutions  have an equal footing in public university admissions.

According to Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled, the six new programmes include two twinning degree programmes and four homegrown degree programmes. About 15,300 students will benefit in these programmes which will be based on industry requirements.
