  • Students can sit for 12 papers in SPM only.

Education Director-General Tan Sri Abdul Ghafar Mamud clarified Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yasin's recent statement that the 10-subject limit for Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) students remain unchanged.

SPM candidates are allowed to take two additional subjects despite the implementation of a 10-subject limit. This means a student is able to sit for a maximum of 12 papers only.

The other 10 papers are from six core subjects --- Bahasa Melayu, English, Islamic Education or Moral Studies, History, Mathematics and Science --- and four additional subjects. Students can choose their elective subjects and are not mandatory.

In 2009, bible knowledge and several language subjects --- Chinese, Tamil or Arabic language, and Chinese or Tamil literature --- were allowed to be taken as elective subjects in SPM. The 1o-subject limit was implemented in 2010.
