More girls than boys in universities in Malaysia

  • There is a higher number of girls in universities than there are boys with male students making up only about 35% of the overall intake of local universities in 2011.
  • The Minister of Higher Education said that there should be a healthy balance for both genders in universities.
  • While there was a good balance of male and female students in technical-based courses, there was a shortage of students enrolled in science and technological based courses.
  • The imbalance number of male and female students have no reported root cause.
  • The Minister said that they will try to fix these problem at the secondary school level.
