MAHSA University College appeals to Government: Support tertiary learning institutions to bring in more foreign students

  • MAHSA University College hopes the government will assist and provide subsidy under Budget 2013 for tertiary learning institutions to bring in more foreign students
  • Unlike the tourism industry, the education industry did not get much help from the government in terms of overseas promotion, said Pro-Chancellor and Executive Chairman Prof Datuk Dr Mohamed Haniffa Abdullah.
  • He added that students who study here tend to bring their family members with them. Students and their family members stay in Malaysia for 3 to 5 years and spend more than an average tourists would.
  • Presently, about 10% of its student population are foreigners, mostly from the Middle East, Africa and South Asia. MAHSA targets about 30% foreign students by 2014.
  • Earlier, the Malaysian Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Tan Sri Nor Mohamed Yakcop witnessed the agreement signing between Public-Private Sector Partnership Unit (UKAS) and MAHSA University College for the RM30 million funding to build a new campus for MAHSA.
  • The RM800 million new campus at Saujana Putra will be built on a 24ha land is expected to be completed in four years. The campus, to be built in two phases, can accomodate about 20,000 students in its full capacity.
  • Once completed, the university college has 8,000 students studying in its two campuses in Petaling Jaya.
