Debaters from the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) were the grand winners of this year’s AustralAsian Intervarsity Debating Champions (English Second Language category) for the second year running.
Second-year law students Ameera Natasha Moore and Hazim Ahmadi, both 21, together with second year economics student Mubarrat Wassey, 23, bested 86 teams from Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
Hosted by New Zealand’s Otago University, the tournament was held from 28 June to 10 July. Among the topics debated were “Modi's victory over the Congress Party should be celebrated,” and “Ladies/Gentlemen should not publicly advocate for policies or political positions during their partner's term in office.”
Ameera will be attending the upcoming Oxford and Cambridge Inter-varsity tournaments in England later this year.
