Tertiary institutions house vast stores of personal data information which makes them a gold mine for credit card fraud, identity theft and cyber attacks.
From 2006 to 2013, 550 universities in the US reported some kind of data breach.
Research universities should be wary of valuable data being stolen, especially those that are state and government-related.
As a solution, universities need to source help and strengthen their computer networks. There should also be call to prioritize sensitive information and acknowledge the threat of cyber attacks.
