Despite memorandums from various groups asking for a delay in the decision, the Malaysian Government will go ahead and make English a must-pass subject in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examinations next year.
According to Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan, they will proceed with making English a must-pass subject as the government places importance on English proficiency.
He added that the ministry will do its best to help teachers and students prepare for the examinations next year, including sending English-proficient teachers to schools which felt that they were not ready.
