  • Formula One engineer Adrian Newey will grace the formal opening of University of Southampton Malaysia Campus (USMC) this evening
  • Special guests from Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education, the Iskandar Regional Development Agency and Iskandar Investment Berhad will also take part in this event

Newey, who earned a First Class honours degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the University of Southampton in 1980, will join special guests Director General Dato' Prof Dr Rujhan bin Mustafa of Malaysia's Ministry of Higher Education and CEO Ir Khairil Anwar Ahmad of Iskandar Investment Berhad for the opening night at [email protected] in South Johor.

“It is my great pleasure to support the University of Southampton for the formal opening of its Malaysia Campus,” said Newey. “My degree from Southampton has certainly assisted me in my career and helped me develop, which I believe will also be true for Southampton’s future graduates in Malaysia and the UK."

Last September, the Campus welcomed its first students to enrol on Southampton’s world-renowned degree in Mechanical Engineering with further programmes to follow including the University’s degree in Electronic and Electrical Engineering later this year and opportunities for PhD students as well.

“The University's vision is to establish an engineering campus in Malaysia, to form close links with other partners in the region, and to attract high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate students from Malaysia, Indonesia and across the whole of the South East Asia Region,” said John McBride, Chief Executive Officer of USMC. “In particular, high-performance engineering is a core part of the new campus curriculum and we’re particularly proud to have one of our high-performance graduates in Adrian Newey join us for this special occasion.”

Newey, the Chief Technical Officer of the Infiniti Red Bull Racing Formula One team, will be in Malaysia preparing for the country’s Formula One Grand Prix. He has won more Formula One Constructors’ Championships than any other designer in the sport’s history, including the last three seasons with Red Bull, and is the only designer to have won Constructors’ Championships with three different Formula One teams.
