47 colleges and universities fined for offering unrecognized programs
- 47 court summonses have been slapped on 47 institutions from January to March of 2011 for offering unregistered programmes, relocating to new premises without approval, and employing lecturers without teaching permits.
- The Ministry of Higher Education warned that students who come out of such programmes face the risk of missing out on job opportunities or platforms for further studies.
- The most recent of cases involved two private providers which failed to adhere to the guidelines under the Private Higher Educational Institutions Act 1996 (Act 555).
- Several factors were taken into account such as the number of enrolled students and the course fees.
- The cumulative amount of compound notices issued up to March of 2011 was around RM470,000.
