The Public Service Department (PSD) has given 1,500 scholarships under the overseas degree programme (PILN) and 2,500 scholarships under the local degree programme (PIDN) to SPM holders last year.
882 Bumiputera students and 618 non-Bumiputera students were given scholarships.
For PIDN, 1,301 Bumiputera students and 1,199 non-Bumiputera students were awarded the scholarships.
10% allocation of scholarships to Sabah and Sarawak Bumiputera students were maintained, of which 75 from Sabah were given PILN.
The government has set aside RM1.44 billion for PSD scholarships (RM0.36 billion for local studies and RM1.08 billion for overseas studies).
Medicine and engineering were both popular choices amongst SPM holders of 2010.
The existing policy for scholarship distribution is expected to be reviewed and improved.
