World-class laboratory in UiTM to enhance Forensic Science and Forensic Engineering programmes

  • Malaysia will have an independent world-class forensic laboratory, the first of its kind in the region, in five years.
  • The lab, to be located at Universiti Teknologi Mara's (UiTM) Institute of Forensic Science, is in affiliation with the University Medicine, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Germany.
  • Malaysia currently does not have enough research on forensics or DNA profiling, thus the university wants to set up this lab to expand these fields further, according to UiTM vice chancellor Datuk Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar.
  • "At present only the police, health ministry forensic experts and chemistry department are involved in assisting the court with expert testimony and forensic reports," he said.
  • Meanwhile, University Medicine chief scientific officer Prof Dr Reinhard Urban said forensic investigations change according to time and it is important to share knowledge and skills with different countries.
  • "When you have a laboratory within or internally, the people from outside cannot be sure of the results … whether it is certified or accurate. Even in Europe, in general, we have independent laboratories in independent institutes that work with the authorities and police. We want to establish a similar effort here," he said.
  • The university will also conduct postgraduate programmes in the forensic field, which is open to all and not just UiTM graduates.
  • "We will send five postgraduate students annually to Germany with scholarship to be trained as forensic experts.
  • "We have established forensic science and have good equipment for it. We will also be starting a forensic engineering programme," Sahol said, adding that UiTM targets to have 25 forensic experts within five years.
  • He said the MoU would incorporate all fields of forensics from pathology to radiology, document analysis, trace evidence, ballistics, law, computer science, and accounting.
