School leavers who have completed Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia may find themselves at the crossroads of what career path to pursue. Despair not and let the experts at the Star Education Fair 2014 this weekend guide you.
SEGi University director of sales and marketing Gary Tan will be sharing advice on making wise career decisions.
“Students should try to identify the right career based on their personalty traits,” Tan said. “If you’re a passive person you may not want to be in an active field like mass communications. Also, if parents force their children into a field, they may not enjoy it or perform well.”
University of Reading Malaysia director of Foundation Studies Clare Nukui will speak on “Sustainable Skills for Future Employment”.
“Much of the knowledge we acquire in school and university we forget over time but there are several important skills that will stick with us if we use and practise them. The ability to conduct research and find out things, think critically, solve problems, communicate effectively both orally and written, as well as teamwork are extremely important skills that will enable you to contribute to discussions and companies,” she said.
iCareer360 chairman and co-founder Datuk Mahadzir Lokman will be sharing tips on how to “Upgrade & Change Yourself 360°”.
“I will be discussing current issues affecting the workforce and why job seekers, especially graduates, are not able to get a job. We have categorised four major components that are important to help upgrade and improve chances of job seekers landing a job – communication, collaboration, creative thinking and charisma,” he said, adding that the talk will also touch on how to dress smartly and apply make-up for work."
Taylor’s University School of Liberal Arts and Sciences dean Dr Andy Nazarechuk, who will be talking on “Selecting a Career for Passion and Profit”, said students should choose career paths they are passionate about but also need to be practical to earn a living.
“Students should do something they have passion and love for. They can only be successful when they put their soul into something,” he said.
These experts are speaking on “Choosing The Right Career Path”, which will be held on the second day of the fair from 11.30am to 1pm.
Visitors attending the Education and Career Talks stand a chance to win e-tickets from Golden Screen Cinemas through fun quizzes. The Star Education Fair will be held this weekend at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre from 11am to 7pm. Admission is free.
