To help address the talent needs of the country, Talent Corporation Malaysia Berhad (TalentCorp) is continuing its efforts to facilitate awareness among the public on the choices of career paths available in the 11 National Key Economic Area (NKEA) sectors by hosting a Sector Focused Career Fair (SFCF) at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). The event was held from 4-5 December.

SFCF UTM was a joint effort between TalentCorp, Graduan and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia. The focus area for the fair was the Engineering Sector.
Professor Dr. Mohd Ismail Abdul Aziz, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and Alumni UTM, said, “It is UTM’s vision to be recognised as a world-centre of academia and technological excellence. The university aims to be a leader in the development of human capital and innovative technologies that will subsequently contribute and complement Malaysia’s transformation.
“Engineering covers a big scope of work and there are bright prospects for the Malaysian engineering sectors. UTM welcomes initiatives like the SFCF, as it provides students with a platform to explore the Engineering industry further and also enables the university to be a part of the nation’s transformational goals,” he added.
According to Johan Mahmood Merican, CEO of TalentCorp, “Both at home and abroad, Engineering is a vast sector with numerous exciting career opportunities. Not only that, the continued growth of Malaysia’s priority sectors hinges on the quality and quantity of Malaysia’s graduates. The SFCF is a great example of the public and private sectors coming together to intensify their talent development efforts, in addition to being aligned to TalentCorp’s strategic objective to Optimise Malaysian Talent.”
More than 20 companies will be participating at SFCF UTM, including the Sunway Group, UMW Toyota Sdn Bhd, Honda Malaysia Sdn Bhd, Altera, and Frost & Sullivan.
The SFCF provides an opportunity for graduates to meet with CEOs and senior HR representatives of participating companies while providing a platform for companies to scout for potential talent from universities in Malaysia. Several critical industries are in need of top talent, and the undergraduates are able to use this opportunity to better understand these developing sectors in Malaysia. The companies also have the opportunity to educate the public about industry developments, sectoral branding and increase understanding of the Engineering industry.
“The engineering sector in Malaysia offers some of the most highly sought after jobs in line with Malaysia’s rapid economic development. From an employer’s perspective, the SFCF provides a great opportunity to engage graduates directly from universities and colleges in Malaysia. We are proud to be a part of the country’s economic transformation by playing a role in developing and enhancing our local talents particularly in the Iskandar Malaysia Region,” said Mohd Redzuan Mohd Sofian, Head of Business Eco-System Division, Iskandar Regional Development Authority (IRDA).
The two-day event included Career Talks and Couch Corner Slot. Career Talks is a platform developed for the young generation to engage with prominent industry leaders while the Couch Corner Slot was designed for the visitors, especially students, to interact with the companies in a relaxed atmosphere.
