Zambry calls for higher-education admissions to be merit-based and free from politics

On April 26, 2026, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir stated that student admissions at public higher education institutions must remain free from political interference. During a press conference in Tanjong Malim, he emphasised that the selection process is strictly merit-based and should not be used for political purposes that could affect students or the integrity of the system.

Zambry clarified that any issues regarding university placements should be handled through the official University Admissions Unit (UPU). He expressed openness to explaining the process to parents, particularly when high-achieving students do not receive initial offers. The minister highlighted the importance of professional standards, stating that the ministry must ensure the university admissions process is free of any political influence that could affect students and the education system. He further noted that the ministry must follow set principles, with merit as its main criterion.

Beyond traditional public universities, the minister noted that students have a range of educational options available to them. These alternative pathways include Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), polytechnics, and community colleges. Zambry explained that these institutions provide essential routes for students to pursue their studies and develop specialised skills.

These statements followed the conclusion of the Jom Masuk Universiti (JMU) 2026 Carnival at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The two-day event aimed to guide SPM holders through their various study options. It featured 74 exhibition booths and 60 entrepreneur stalls, attracting an estimated 20,000 attendees.
