Almost everyone knows Yale University, the American Ivy League member which has graduated many notable alumni, including 5 US presidents and 20 living billionaires. Their acceptance rate? A meager 6.27% last year. But, did you know that The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Yale University established Yale-NUS College as an autonomous college within NUS back in 2011? If you do, then did you also know that it has an even LOWER acceptance rate than the 316-year old Yale, at just 5%?

The 6-year old Yale-NUS, which emphasises broad-based, multidisciplinary learning as well as depth of study is mainly comprised of, you guessed it, Singaporeans, followed closely behind by students from the United States, India and China respectively. With a student body which is around 1/5th of that of Yale’s 5,000, their highly selective criteria are, statistically speaking, more stringent than even Harvard. While Yale-NUS College is indeed independent of Yale University, the relationship between the two institutions is collaborative, supportive and mutually enriching.

The data, which was released for the first time by Yale-NUS, who previously kept it out of the public glare, gave many their first glance at the high standards set by this autonomous campus bearing the name of two of the most highly ranked universities in the world. For anyone wondering what set of requirements they do require, according to the Frequently Asked Questions section of Yale-NUS’ website, it states that there is no magical set of courses, grades, essay topics and accomplishments that will guarantee admission into Yale-NUS college. So, I guess just work hard, then.

Some of the courses offered at Yale-NUS College include:
