  • Malaysia will need more anaesthetists, according to the Anaesthetists Association of Malaysia.
  • The ratio of anaesthesiologist or anaesthetist in Malaysia is 1:45,000 whereas in developed countries, the ratio is 1:10,000.
  • The lack of anaesthetist is still manageable as more doctoral students (about 40 to 50) are expected to graduate each year.
  • Nevertheless, steps must be taken to augment the number of practitioners to ensure a sufficient number of anesthesiologists.
  • According to Dr. V. Svasakhthiberkata, a career as an anaesthetist is not simply about giving anaesthetic before surgery. The expert is also responsible for continuously monitoring the patient in the intensive care unit as well as managing chronic pain that may occur after surgery.
