Vocational colleges need to pick up on rising number of applicants

  • Number of applications outweighs number of available seats
  • Call for more vocational colleges and better tie-ups with private colleges

Immediate steps to meet the rising number applicants in vocational colleges are needed. This is the instruction of Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to the Ministry of Education. He said that the current capacity of 21,000 places is not enough to accommodate the 117,000 applications received this year.

He added that these additional places could be made by setting up more vocational colleges and more collaborations with private colleges. He added that 100 memorandums of understanding would be worked out in 2013.

In January 2012, 15 secondary vocational schools were upgraded to vocational colleges which in turn recruited over 3,100 PMR school leavers.
